What classifies something as a "sport"?

There is a little debate going on in the Daytona 500 thread about what is and what isn't a sport.

What is your definition of a sport?

Are racing, bowling, golf, etc sports?

Personally, I think they all are sports and Dictionary.com defines a sport as:

    1. An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

2.a Particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.

    3. Diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

I think a better question is "What isn't a sport?" Auto racing is a sport in the sense that tidlly winks, midget wrestling and rhythmic gymnastics are sports, e.g., NASCAR is a joke, not a sport.

Sucker, aka soccer, is a sport, although it's a colossal waste of time.

An activity that requires a person or team to go on the defensive.

Basketball, football, baseball, racing (a driver is defending their position all throughout the race), etc. are sports.

    Golf, bowling...those are games.

So curling, is that a sport? It requires 0 athletic ability.

Anything where you can perform well without being physically fit is not a sport. This would include golf, bowling, and car racing. probably baseball too.

I would LOVE to see you try to muscle a stock car around a track at 200 mph. Its not like taking the Sunday drive to church.

So how can 70 year old guys compete at the top level if it requires so much strength?

I guess that classifies chess as a sport.

Sure, it's a sport...it just doesn't require a lot of physical athletic ability.

My classication would go like if it requires athletic ability it is a sport.

If it requires no athletic ability but perhaps a certain skill set then I would say it is a game.

Re: What classifies something as a "sport"?

Well as we saw yesterday and part of today the Daytona500 thread has a wide array of opinions by different members of the CF crowd. So here is my take on everything. This is my opinion – which means if you think I’m wrong, or you don’t agree, that is ok!!

    Is NASCAR a sport?

I say yes. Some people have a hard time see the driver as an athlete. To that I say OK so if not the driver what about the pit crew? Have you ever tried changing 4 tires, cleaning a windshield, removing tape from a grill, adding a turn of wedge, and adding 18 gallons of fuel in less than 18 seconds? If you haven’t go out side and see how fast you can change the tires on your car – heavy aren’t they. In my mind NASCAR is an amazing TEAM sport, it’s not all about the driver here.

    In NASCAR we have:
Hard physical labor by the pit crew
Long hours of concentration by the driver and spotter
Extensive strategy and planning by the crew chief
Fans that will pay good money to see it live
    A large following of fans

Like I said IMO yes it’s a sport. However I can see how some would not think so, and I respect that – so why can’t the same respect flow in the other direction?

So there are really only about 5 sports in this world then?

Re: What classifies something as a "sport"?

no I can think of quite a few off the top of my head.
And let me kind of rephrase what I said a bit, If it requires athletic ability to be at the top of the activity then it is a sport.

So I would consider golf a sport, even though there are guys on the tour some would not consider athletes the people that are most regularly are on the top are.
