    Off Topic: Good mechanic?

I just moved to Ankeny last summer and I haven't had any car trouble until now. Is there a good mechanic around? I live right by the interstate and I could limp my car into Des Moines as well. I just want to take my car someplace reliable and not get worked over on the price. Thanks guys.

Denny's Automotive. Three blocks east of Butch's Gas on Lincolnway and Duff and one block south.

    Re: Off Topic: Good mechanic?

Best place I have found in Ankeny is lange tire. I had a blown tire on my car with like 5,000 miles on it, they actually told me it would be cheaper to take it somewhere else. They even arranged my appt there. I went in to pay and he would not take any $$$. I have gone there ever since. They have done all the maintenance on my Maxima. It usually comes in about 1/2 what the dealer charges.

+1 on Lange Tire. I used to manage the Kwik Shop downtown, and they got all my business.

I've takne my Blazer to Cottman's Transmission on Hickman in Des Moines.
They've been very good to me. I know they haven't jobbed me. From what I understand, the city of Clive takes their squad cars there.

I'd be able to tell more if I knew the nature of the problem. Major engine or drivetrain, battery, flat tire, wiring issues, etc...??? Heck, if it was something simple, I'd help you myself(other then towing it off the interstate)

Ankeny Tire and Battery, on Ankeny Blvd, 1 block south of 1st Street. My father-in-law swears by them.

I've actually had bad luck at Lange where they would rather search my car for other thigns to fix than fix what I took the car in for in the first place. I'd take it there before work and all day I would get calls, you need to fix this, this is worn and should be replaced, etc.

    Re: Off Topic: Good mechanic?

When I was at ISU, my car had a problem and I took it to Benson Buick and lets just say they gave me the fencepost with no vaseline. I still got splinters from that shaft job. I will never set foot in that joint again, they saw a college kid coming and charged me up the wazzoo and didn't even fix the problem. Stay away from that place...

I'll second Ankeny Tire and Battery. Always happy with there work. If the car is foreign, there's an English dude in Des Moines who doesn't screw you over. He doesn't charge a penny to hook you up to his diagnostic service. Dealers stick you for a hundred to do that. My wife paid a hundred bucks once to find out her gas cap was loose.

    Re: Off Topic: Good mechanic?

I've had good service from Tim's Amoco on the corner of 1st and Ankeny Blvd in Ankeny. I've had both our cars in there on different occasions. My brother-in-law from Altoona swears by them as well.

More info on the nature of the problem would be helpful.

    Re: Off Topic: Good mechanic?

About a year ago, I had coolant leaking from somewhere in my Dakota. Took it to Stew Hansens and got a work order for a new pump and all the fixings. Quote came out to something like $400. Did a little comparison shopping and decided to take it AAMCO on Hickman by K-Mart. Left it with them for the weekend and gave them instructions based on what Stew's had told me - they didn't look for themselves at this point.

They called me the next day and said it wasn't the pump at all, but rather a bad gasket on the thermostat and that they should just replace that. Bill came out to short of $100 as I recall.

Now they could've put that thing on, fixed the gasket and left the existing themostat and I never would've been any the wiser. Honestly like that, especially in auto repairs, carries alot of weight with me.

    Haven't had a problem since.

If you want to stay in town I would strongly suggest Tim's Amoco. When I first moved to town I spent tons of time pricing and found them to be the best value hands down.

Yep, my bad. I will delete that old post.
