    Question for Marching Band Members

Any marching band members out there? You guys did a great job as normal, but I was wondering about one thing. I noticed that after most of the first downs, you guys didn't play the first down anthem that you normally do. I think I heard it once near the beginning of the second half. Is there any particular reason for that? Just curious. I think it's a shame if it's not going to be used anymore. Otherwise, great job! Keep up the good work!

Re: Question for Marching Band Members

Not a band member but I remember a few years ago there was a lot of debate about it distracting the football team... so they went to only playing it when the team was on the opposite side of the field

Re: Question for Marching Band Members

Hey, former band member here, but I can tell you the story. It started in '06 with someone from the football staff saying we had played too loud and disrupted the players during the 1st Down cheer. Ever since then, we were basically forbidden from playing the cheer when the team was on the same side of the field as us. It did seem like they played it much less than usual last night though

Re: Question for Marching Band Members

Talking to people still close to the marching band this year, it sounds like they basically put the lid on the cheer altogether this year. Allegedly due to the no-huddle offense.

Re: Question for Marching Band Members

there is no "lid" however our director more or less wanted to feel out how fast of an offense this really is to figure out how much time we had to play in between downs. He directed us during the third quarter and if you noticed we played a lot more than we did the entire first half. I would expect more playing next week and as the season goes.

We have been told by coaches in the past especially last year not to play while our offense was on the north end of the field. That is not the case this year, yet. CPR is a big supporter for us and I doubt he will tell us to be quiet very much.

There's a guy in the student section that blares his horn to the tune and the cheer continues...

Re: Question for Marching Band Members

The reasons (as I see it from inside the band) are as follows:

    1. We have been more or less forbidden from playing 1st (and 3rd) down while the team is on our side of the field due to the volume of sound and the fact that we're at field level.

    2. This was kind of a test run to see how our playing can fit into the new offense. If anyone remembers the first game of 2007, this is more or less what we did then too.

    3. Two of our drum majors (for the non-initiated, the people who call off and direct what we're playing) are new, so they were getting used to whole game day experience.

Re: Question for Marching Band Members

I don't think CPR will complain I have been to games at Auburn where he was last year and it is MUCH MUCH LOUDER than our stadium. If the players can't figure out how to play with Jack Trice loud we will never win on the road.

I really hope this hopes to be true for you guys. I really thought the band got the shaft when Chizik decided to use us as his scapegoat when he couldn't get plays in the last couple years.
