    Defense not so bad.

Take out the 2 big plays and they gave up 3 yards per rushing attempt. I think I saw more good tackles from the team than most games last year. I don't remember seeing a play where we let a receiver get wide open down the middle, although LJ did lose his guy on that TD.

I thought our defense was a lot worse against SDSU last year. It was just the turnovers that turned that into a bigger blowout.

Not QB pressure until late in the game. Big runs up the middle. The D has a lot of work to do.

I'd much rather figure out how to fix giving up those big plays than figure out how to stop the team from giving up 6 yards every play.

The first big run had a lot of poor tackling. Not sure of the positioning. The reverse I think could have been limited to a 10-20 yard run had LJ forced him to the inside.

You can do that? Sweet. In that case, take out March 14, 2008 and my Bear Stearns shares are still worth $68.

Dean Wormer was wrong. Fat, drunk and stupid was a great way to go through college (all five years of it).

We knew we'd have no pass rush. We had nothing last year so it can't be any worse.

We gave up the one massive rush up the middle with a bunch of poor tackles. Other than that and the end around, they only had 3 rushes between 8 and 17 yards and only 6 others over 5 yards. That leaves 27/38 rushing attempts of fewer than 5 yards.

I thought it was quite a bit better than the SDSU game last year. We actually made them punt a lot of times.

    Re: Defense not so bad.

People always freak out anytime somebody points out an "if or a "but". Really, you can't take away their two big plays? Thanks for enlightening us, we never could have figured that out on our own.

Come on people, it isn't hard to figure out what the original poster meant. The point he/she made is that the defense looked better and more consistent than last year, but still gave up a few big plays. Figure out how to limit the number of big plays we give up and the defense has a chance to be solidly improved over last year.

    Re: Defense not so bad.

I think the offense will be just fine...this team will be solid to good on special teams. But I spent most of my time watching the DT's on every snap, and they were not getting off blocks well at all. NDSU was dictating terms on the inside, and they probably should have gone with more runs off guard. That's just an area you can't really scheme around so much...you make strides there in the weight room out of season and in recruiting.

Burnham has already stated that the guys are not performing the way he wants. I thought the play was better but the big plays are something he will be focusing on. We need to stop the yards after first contact IMO

Bingo. Those are problems you just can't fix and when we hit the Big 12 we'll need to outscore teams again this year. Hopefully we have the firepower to do so.

    Re: Defense not so bad.

Not so bad? We gave up about 150 yards to one guy on NDSU. That's pretty bad. Fortunately, they gave us the ball on their goal line - otherwise we're looking at an entirely different game.

Sims certainly impressed me and there are a couple of guys that were here last season that played well - but otherwise the group is not going to provide much help to the team.

    Re: Defense not so bad.

Our defense is awful. The Bison ran all over us. They were more physical than we were. We tackled well at the start, but reverted to old bad habits as the game wore on. I thought Smith and Sims had outstanding games. LJ had a good game. The TD was a perfect throw and a terrific catch. The front four play as well as they can, but they are not very talented. Our weak side LB was not effective at all. The Bison wore out that side of the field.

One of the big things for our defense has got to be TO's. Without getting some TO's, I doubt we can win many games. I know everyone is going to say we can't give up big plays, but we can't play that aggressive defense with our talent level without taking some chances. Crashing ends are going to get burned on reverses and end around plays for example.

Watching our defense play, I can see that our offense is going to have to produce. And we are going to have to pry the ball out a couple times a game.

We are going to have to guess right some with slants and blitzes and pull the ball out at every opportunity. We ain't got the horses.

We were playing NDSU! This 'D' will not keep any B12 team under 30. OK, maybe K. State.

    Re: Defense not so bad.

Our weakest spots on Defense are DT and OLB. Unfortunately, those might be the two most important positions in stopping the run. Frere did not impress me much last night.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?
