    Updated thoughts for the season...

What does everyone think for the rest of the season now that we have one game under our belts?

Personally I was disappointed tonight. I know it was the first game but I think the offense has to work on their timing. The offense was not really what has me concerned.

I am pretty concerned about the defense. I was bothered about the lack of pressure on the QB. Once again I know this was the first game but I am still concerned. What I am more bothered by is the lack of tackling. I did notice a few times the D made some tackles than what would have happened the last couple of years but geez guys, come on wrap them up!

On a positive note, I was very happy with the special teams. The KR was good, I was happy with the way Lenz handled a couple of those PR and held onto the ball. I thought punting was ok and I liked the FG kicking. I thought the last FG attempt in the first half was in until I saw it bounce. I was watching on the TV by a concession stand.

A week ago I would have said 5-6 wins and could have made a case for up to 8 wins. Now I am in the 3-4 win camp. What do you all think?

I watched most of the games tonight and no one looks sharp. Every team was sloppy and some games were almost unwatchable. I wouldn't look to far into this week, but will be a tell tale sign will be how much we improve from week one to week two. How that game goes will tell all we need to know about this team.

Lenz was really close to breaking a couple of tackles for a big return. Can't win games if ya don't know how to tackle..

"We embrace that challenge and what it presents to us. Im going to approach all 12 games this way: Were going to win them all. If we prepare and then go out and execute, were going to win all 12. Now how many are we going to end up with at the end of the year? I dont know, and youre right, I wont put a number on it."- Paul Rhoads on having the toughest schedule in the Big 12

Re: Updated thoughts for the season...

We played at lot better than I thought we would tonight, defensively anyway.

I thought it was a really good game. Its been a long time since we've given a good true beat down on a 1AA team like that. Take away the 6 free turnovers from SDSU, which made that game look more lopsided than it really was, and you have to go back a long time to see a win like that over a 1AA team.

Offensive timing was pretty good. Not much for trouble getting plays in considering we didnt have headsets available to coaches for a good portion of the game.

We were what we thought we would be. A spread offense without the playmaking WRs and hopefully working toward becoming a bend dont break D.

Congrats to coach and the boys! Hard to be more happy.

These are the types of comments we should be leaving. There are alot of people on some other threads that are just being very critical after one game, a new head coach, a new system... need I go on. A win after a brutal season last year is just what the Cyclone Nation needed! +1 for you ajk4st8!

I guess I wasn't expecting the same players to somehow get magically 10x more athletic over a few months. The game plan and play calling looked totally sound tonight.

Maybe it looked better than I thought it could be because I remember how we were pretty much the worst BCS school in all of football last year.

It always seemed crazy to expect a bowl game. But the fun part is as a fan... you can still hope and cheer for a bowl game. You just dont have to be disappointed when you dont get there.

Re: Updated thoughts for the season...

I was extremely disappointed in the defense in the first 35 minutes or so. The second half was better but still below average. Defensive line is too slow and too small. Not really sure why I thought they'd be improved when it's largely the same guys as last year. Sims is the real deal, which is great. Thought the Smith boys played solid tonight, even though you could tell James Smith wasn't 100 percent. He should be starting ASAP again IMO.

Offense will be fine. They weren't sharp overall tonight but the first game with a new coordinator is always iffy. Arnaud was bad for his standards in the first half but turned it around in the 2nd half. A-Rob looked great, as did Money Reynolds and Hamilton. I can't wait to see Darks and Sed Johnson step in and get in the mix.

Special teams was very pleasing to me.

Before the opener I thought they were a 5-7 team. Now I'd say 4-8. Defense looks troubling again this year.

Nobody should have expected us to magically come out bigger, stronger, and faster. I agree, the play calling was sound. It was called, the short sideline look, and the snap... just like it should be done. Oh... and I love the fact that we had what one penalty all night....very disciplined.

    1. Sound, but not good enough a lot of times. I called what was coming from the crowd and I have never watched any of Herman's stuff.

    2. This was nice.

Just look at the improvement from the offense in half 1 to half 2. Looked much sharper in the second half. Only one drive for no score in the second half until the Schwartz fumbled.

Did anyone else love that we tried to score at the end of the half.
