    Re: ISU Returning Starters

with alot of new guys with some talent

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Of course, if you go off of who were starters from ISU's final 3 games, they return 10 starters on O and around 7 or 8 starters on D. Of course, of those guys, Darks may not be starting at WR due to injury [it sounds like I'm wrong here though ... I happily stand corrected though] and Smith won't be starting at safety because he apparently got beat out (or something like that). Thus, the number of returning starters is slightly exaggerated.

Furthermore, here's a list of some of the listed returning starters (who are listed as starters) who will arguably be rather exploitable:

    Alex Alvarez (JR), OG
Jesse Smith (SR), MLB [exploitable in coverage ... very good against the run]
Fred Garrin (SR), LB [decent but not great LB]
Rashawn Parker (SR), DE [undersized DE whose development seemed to peak early]
Austin Alburtis (JR), DT [Promising talent, but a first year starter who will make noob mistakes early in the season]

Also, while ISU fans are very high on their DBs ... and rightly so ... I think that safety play early in the season could be an issue for them. If O'Connell remains ahead of the prior returning starter (James Smith) ... then the safeties will necessarily be a little bit more prone to make mistakes early in the season. On the flip side, the group has a great chance to be very good as the season progresses.

Ofiicial accounts say that O'Connell has earned the spot based on making fewer mistake in the new system than Smith...

I thought Darks will play but is not starting. Didn't Rhoads confirm that in his press conference on Monday? He was beat out recently by Reynolds and Lenz.

this is what everything on clone zone is saying. "starting" doesnt really matter because the wrs rotate so much. darks is down on the depth chart but will play no less than if he was 1st on the depth chart.
