    Bad accident

As is true with most major rivers, there are only a few bridges crossing the Columbia river; yesterday, a tractor-trailer took out a bridge near me single handedly. No one knows exactly what happened, but a semi ran into the bridge supports going 60+mph and the truck fell into the river killing two. The bridge has since been closed and may remain closed for weeks or even months while the bridge is being repaired.

Here is the kicker, I used to cross this bridge to get to the bank (about 25 miles from home), now if I want to go to that same bank I will have to drive close to 90 miles one way. I'll actually be going to a different bank that is only 60 miles away, but because of federal law, I have to make trips to the bank almost everyday.

What is even worse are the kids that now have to travel at least 60 miles to get to school because they lived on the wrong side and that everyone that lives on the east side is now stranded from the hospital, ambulance and fire protection. Oh, did I also state that they are doing construction further down the road, so to actually drive around it will take around 20 minutes longer than normal. A hour and twenty minutes to get to a school you can see from your back yard.

Is this anywhere near the Gorge? If so, will it impact getting to it from either Seattle or Spokane?

North of the Gorge on a north/south hwy. The only way it might affect the Gorge is if you are coming over the North Cascades hwy from the coast, or if you live in the area. You going to the Gorge soon?

    Re: Bad accident

I wonder if they will look at any other options. Several years ago safety concern temporarily shut down the bridge over the Mississippi at Winona, MN. The closest alternative bridge resulted in something like a 90 mile detour. They helped relieve the problem by setting up a ferry service until the bridge was repaired.

    Re: Bad accident

Not this year. Camped there last year for the DMB shows and those shows are coming up this weekend again. So I was just wondering if those folks might have any problems getting there this year.

    Re: Bad accident

Most of the problems are going to be for the locals and for the tourist coming up for Labor day. It could affect traffic to the North Cascades NP and it is affecting traffic to Chelan which is one of the biggest tourist locations in the state.

No way that they could do a ferry at this location. Only the first few dams on the Columbia have locks. The dams near this bridge...well...here is the dam closest to me:

This is what I was thinking. A ferry to at least get people across - they could use public transportation or carpool from there. Don't know what you do for fire protection or the hospital though. I suppose a ferry would get you to the hospital for minor stuff...and then you just have to set up temporary fire stations somewhere i guess...

    That's rough!

Be safe in all your extra long detour driving jaretac!

    not to be a downer...

I don't mean to make light of the effects this accident has your daily
commute, honest. But somewhere, there's a family that will be holding
two loved ones in their hearts forever, and I'm pretty sure they'd give
anything to be holding them in their arms instead.

    peace, peace, peace on earth.

This is kind of what I was thinking - someone is being awefully damn selfish complaining about their issues when someone lost a couple of loved ones.

Heck, throw some boats on the bank and go back and forth.

May I help you down off your horse?

If you read my op, you will notice I'm not mad about having to drive the extra distance, I'm mad about having to do so everyday, sometimes so I can deposit one $20 check. Also notice the last paragraph, that it is not affecting me in that way, the only other way that it affects me is that my department is now responding to the fire and EMS calls in that area (at least 30 minutes away).

Last, something I've learned from over 10 years working in emergency services, which have included far worse accidents than this; the dead are dead, there is nothing more that can be done for them which means it is time to focus on the living. Beating yourself up in anyway because someone has died is not healthy. If you could hear some of the things that are said on a accident scene by police/fire/ems, you would say that they were being insensitive; yet, they are the ones that came flying in to help while everyone else watched.

No remote capture ability? There are services available where you can deposit checks remotely to your bank via image capture - you might want to look into that.
