Lightbulb Three is the Magic Number....

Ok, people are starting to talk. While the NCAA's seem unlikely unless they're able to win the BigXII tourney, the NIT is definitely reachable if they can finish somewhat solid. And while I'm trying not to put the cart in front of the horse since there is a ton of games left, this is something we should be talking about so as fans we realize the significance of the remaining schedule. Here is some food for thought...

Clones win 3 out of the next 5 and they're playing some post-season ball. This would give them a 16-14 record and probably be seeded in the 8/9 game in the BigXII Tourney most likely playing a Neb. or Mizzou. Even if they were to loose that first game, they'd have a 16-15 resume which with the schedule they played this year is good enough (esp. when you consider that the committee would love to have host a game at a venue like Hilton.)

Glancing at last year's NIT bracket, the worst record for teams making it in was 15-14 or 16-15 (Minnesota, Penn State, Virginia, Miami). Our schedule this year is similar to what these teams went thru a year ago. I'm not saying we couldn't get snubbed, but it's looking very good at that point. Basically slightly over .500 or bust.

A more likely winning scenario for us is 2 out of the next 5. I'm not even going to venture a guess at what games they could be either. However this 1 game is a HUGE difference. We'd be sitting at 15-15, definitely needing at least 1 win in the tourney. But the kicker is that we're now looking at the 7/10 seeded game (us being the 10) and playing a team like TTech/OU (a definitely tougher matchup....and you can be sure OU won't spot us points in the first half on a neutral court a second time around.)

1 win out of the next five and we're talking early about next year barring a very deep run in the tournament. (Maybe making the championship game.)

Conclusion: You could make an argument that these next five games to be either won or lost matter much more to our post-season resume than the tourney games. Of course, while both are important, we can't sit back and hope for something good to happen in the BigXII tourney. I hate to put more pressure on these next few games, but our post-season hopes depend on them. I hope we can get it done. Either way though, GMac has made a believer out of me for years to come.

one game at a time. we can win all 5, but not today. the toughest remaining game is obviously in lawrence. weve already shown we can play with those guys and we always play hard at their place. it would be great to win 3+, but 1 at a time.

Completely agree....but the purpose of the thread wasn't to guess how many games we'll win, but rather let us as fans realize the significance of the remaining games on our schedule prior to the B12 tourney. I hope the team does take it one game at a time, otherwise we're in trouble.

Keep in mind that eight fewer teams make it to the NIT this year than last so a record good enough too make it last year might not be good enough this year.

And even last year's record that was good enough to make the NIT wasn't good enough.

Re: Three is the Magic Number....

Well 16-14 didn't get us in last year, so it will probably take more than 2 games above .500 this year.
Our attendance doesn't help us much either, since they can probably find enough teams with better attendance than us to host first round games.
