Mac want Jiri to put on 25 pounds?

"The sky's the limit for Jiri," McDermott said. "He needs to put 25 pounds on in the offseason. He probably doesn't believe that, but if he'd do that, he could make a lot of money in this game someday." - Quoted in today's DMR.

What a difference 25 pounds would make to Jiri's game. I know 25 pounds (and 35 years) has made a lot of difference in my game.

If Jiri put on another 25 pounds of MUSCLE, that's the key, not fat. You could bet he'd be averaging close to 20 points and 10 rebounds a game next year.

I work at one of the Dining Centers on campus, and Jiri, Wesley Johnson, Mike Taylor and Cory McIntosh are always eating together. All Jiri needs is Dodie, and he has both of those things!

I used to talk so much crap about Jiri and complained that he saw time on the court, but the guy has some really good post moves. I imagine if he were to put on some good weight and work on his overall athleticism, he would have a shot to play professionally somewhere.

Re: Mac want Jiri to put on 25 pounds?

25 lbs of muscle in a year is easy. Just hit the squat rack and eats lots and lots of protein. I have gained 12 lbs just in the last 4 months doing this. Bodyfat has gone from 25% -> 16% also. It would take some dedication, but if he could add 25lbs of muscle it may be the difference between the nba and some team in Kahzikstan.

With how slow and lethargic Jiri always walks around campus and especially the UDCC I'd figure he'd HAVE to be putting on weight

I'm guessing you aren't putting 12lbs. of muscle in four months on a fairly thin 6'11" frame. It doesn't happen as easily for everyone.

Re: Mac want Jiri to put on 25 pounds?

The other thing that needs to happen is that JH, RM, and whoever else intends to play power forward/center on this team need to leave Ames for the summer and find a more structured summer basketball league to play in.

They need to play in a leauge where other post players participate, and where the ball actually gets passed into the post on a regular basis. IMO, there's no point for anyone trying to get better at the those positions to play in the run-and-gun Capitol City League (or whatever they call it now).

That is where the strength and conditioning coaches come in.

He will have to change his off season habits. The future is in front of him, he needs to take it immediately after the season closes. Does he????

There is a big man's camp out in California that did wonders for Brunner. We could send a delegation from Ames with Marsden, Thompson, and Hubalek.

Yeah I am only 6 foot tall, but I also don't have the benefit of having all my expenses paid for, a nutritionist, and a strength coach. College athletes have it made.

Re: Mac want Jiri to put on 25 pounds?

I really agree with GMAC on this, I think when Jiri plays with passion, there is not limit to what he can do. If he pu on the muscle and kept playing with energy, he could average 20 & 10. He has some great moves down low and he has a decent mid-range jumper to help compliment it. He could probably be a good off the bench guy in the NBA or overseas if he really, really wanted to have a career in basketball. It would take some work but it's up to him to decide if it's worth it in the end.
