    Major Medical vs. Cobra

Any insurance guys out there? I'm leaving my company and starting with another. I would like to take some time off between jobs, but I wanted to see how much it will cost to insure my family until the new job's insurance kicks in, 30 days after I start.

I've heard Cobra is very expensive and have also heard that Major Medical is a very affordable option.

Major medical is the way to go. You could even consider major medical for you and the mrs., and if you had any kids do a bcbs plan for them. but if it were short-term i'd do major medical and not lose any sleep over that decision.

    Re: Major Medical vs. Cobra

I changed jobs about a year ago, and if I remember correctly, Cobra would have cost me about 900 per month for my family of 3.
I ended up only having about 15 days without insurance, which was a risk I was willing to take. Figured what I had in the HSA account would cover in a pinch.
I have friends that have used Major Medical, and were pleased. (didn't have to use it, and it didn't cost much.)

Major Medical (Short Term) is the way to go. I am an Insurance guy, that is the route I would take. Cobra will be very expensive.

    Re: Major Medical vs. Cobra

When I quit my job several years ago, the Cobra was expensive but you did not have to sign up for it the day you quit. In other words, if your layoff between jobs is short, you may be able to go without and then sign up for the Cobra if you actually need it. I don't remember what that window that you have to sign up for the Cobra is, and it is possible the loophole has been closed.

Good call - meaning that he might have 90 days (or whatever amount of time) in which he wouldn't have to buy major medical, if that i the route he wanted to take.

Talk to your HR department, but this is the way to go. COBRA is retroactive, so you can pay only if you need it.
