Big XII coach of the year

Here are my thoughts on the records each coach would need to achieve to win Coach of the Year.

    Mack Brown 12-0
    Bob Stoops 12-0
    Mike Gundy 11-1
    Mike Leach 10-2
    Bo Pelini 10-2
    Gary Pinkle 9-3
    Mark Mangino 9-3
    Art Bryles 8-4
    Mike Sherman 8-4
    Dan Hawkins 8-4
    Bill Snyder 8-4
    Paul Rhoads 7-5

I think Rhoads, Bryles, and Sherman are the only guys who can win it without winning their division. Everybody else needs a division championship to go with their W-L record above. So who's gonna win it?

Re: Big XII coach of the year

I would have to put my money on Mack Brown simply because i think he has the best team but would love to see one of the coaches from the North win besides Pelini of course.....

Re: Big XII coach of the year

What happens if more than one coach meets your required wins? Suppose Mack Brown goes 12-0 but Mike Gundy goes 11-1 with his only loss to Texas, and Mangino goes 9-3, and Rhoads goes 7-5. Who wins then?

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

Are you voting for him because you think he's the best coach, or because he's a man?

Re: Big XII coach of the year

I'm gonna go with Jamie Pollard on this one, since he is the one who really coaches the team and is solely responsible for the wins and losses of the program.

I like Gundy in the South, but I'd rather see a coach in the north win it - I'm sick of the South!!

    No way Pelini,

Nebraska is in for a HUGE letdown this year. They'll be lucky to finish 7-5.

Re: Big XII coach of the year

Going into the season, based on how I think things will play out, I think it's either going to be Mike Sherman or Dan Hawkins. I think A&M is in store for a big bounce back year as long as they can improve their defense. Sherman is too good of a coach not to improve in year two. If he can get A&M to 7-5 with an upset possibly over UT, OU or OSU. He'd probably get it simply because all the other coaches respect him so much.

If Hawkins goes 8-4, he's got a great shot at it.

Extreme darkhorse here is Bill Snyder. Every coach in the league respects the hell out of the guy and all he has to do is get KSU bowl elgible and you know he'll get plenty of votes.

Of course, if UT or OU goes 12-0, that very well could trump all. Also, if OSU is 11-1 or 10-2, Gundy gets a lot of play. I think OSU is a paper lion though, and I seriously see them at 8-9 wins.

Re: Big XII coach of the year

My vote is for Paul Rhoads after his 13-1 season w/his only loss coming in the Big 12 championship game to undefeated Texas I would poo myself if this happened!!! On a more serious not I say Gundy unless somehow Rhoads, Hawkins, Bryles, Snyder, or Sherman find a way to get 9 or 10 wins then I think you have to definitely put them in the mix for such a big turnaround. I don't think a 7 or 8 win coach will win coach of the year.

Re: Big XII coach of the year

I think it wouldtake 8 wins for Rhoads to be awarded that honor. 7 doesn't cut it. ISU could win all 4 non-conference games then go 3-5 in the big 12. That doesn't cut it for big 12 coach of the year.

Well he is the Athletic Director. So yes, he is the man who is ultimately responsible for the performance of our athletic programs, both success-wise and budget-wise. That is his job description. Obviously he is not solely responsible for every minor detail, but he is the man in charge of our athletic dep't.
