    Impressive attention to detail

A guy that I work with coaches the football team at a local private school. After winning their first game, he received a letter of congratulations from the ISU staff. He was very impressed, and said that this staff "gets it" when dealing with high school coaches. Just thought I would pass it along.

That is awesome. Hell all Eugene would have done is send them a letter saying they watched film of their game, that they only had 1 low end D-1 talent level player on their team and that ISU wasn't going to bother looking at him.

Great news! This is the kind of stuff that is going to get better players to Iowa State. The kids and coaches are going to see that our coaches care about the kids.

Rhoads is copying the McCarney way of doing things down to a T, and I love it.

Chiz, wouldn't hae even have done that. Not once in the two year he was here did a member of that staff even step foot inside Ames High. Thats 3 miles away for gods sake. Within days of becoming head coach CPR was in the school talking to the coaches.

    Also Tuberville, Harris, and Wannstedt.
Do college coaches send a letter of condolences to the other team's coach.

In the speeches or talks that I've heard Rhoads give, he mentions the "McCarney way" of doing things a lot more than the other coaches, although he talks highly of Wannstedt. I've never heard him mention Walt Harris.
A friend who's an ISU professor started buying football season tickets in the early 2000's solely because of the handwrittten note he got from Coach Mac, congratulating him on the teaching award he received. I bet Rhoads is doing the same thing.

Consider the audience. I do not doubt that PR picked up things from DMac, Tuberville, Wannstedt, and even Harris. I also hope he picked up things not to do from those coaches.

Rag on McCarney's gameday decision making all you want- no one could deny his work ethic. I can't imagine writing so many letters and remembering everyone's name the way he did. The one time I met him he was busy pumping gas into his blazer at the Kum & Go on Welch during the 2001 season. I just yelled, "Dan?" He looked up and said, "Yeah?" I walked over saying I just wanted to shake his hand and told him to keep up the good work. He had no problem coming to meet me half way, look me in the eye and say, "Thank you very much, we appreciate the support." Generic line (he probably did that a hundred times every day)- but he was very sincere about it.

Firm handshake. Wasn't there a post last fall about how Chiz had a weak handshake??

He also turned down Auburn to stay with Harris at Pitt in 2002, and left ISU to coach with Harris at Pitt (and move up to DC). I read into that no more than one should read into DMac not getting a head coaching job after ISU.

The last staff paid a lot of attention to details too. Unfortunately, they could never get past lining up helmets to show it. Darned helmets, always moving around on you. Can't we get a GPS unit that is accurate to within a micromillimeter?
