Tim Griffin Comments on the Ames Tribune

ESPN's Tim Griffin just posted a very interesting blog referring to an article that was recently written in the Ames Tribune.

    Here's the link.

    Can't really argue anything.

We don't have anything to show for ourselves. It's got to change within the next 5 years.

You can't really argue with his logic, but all those teams have not been where they're at forever. It has to start somewhere, sometime. Why not here and now?

I think it's a stretch to include K-State in the mix in their present condition.

Re: Tim Griffin Comments on the Ames Tribune

I can't agree that 10 of the 12 schools have "legitimate" BCS claims. He's also off in his count of BCS appearances:

Bowl Championship Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Big 12 teams in BCS bowls:

    Oklahoma - 7
    Texas - 3
    Nebraska - 3
    Kansas - 1
    Kansas State - 1
    Texas A&M - 1
    -----
    Baylor - 0
    Colorado - 0
    ISU - 0
    Missouri - 0
    Oklahoma State - 0
    Texas Tech - 0

How can 10 of the 12 teams have "legitimate" BCS claims when 6 of the 12 have never been anywhere near a BCS bowl? Of the 6 who have been, K-State will likely never go again, and of the 6 who have not, it's very unlikely that any of them will go anytime soon. Oklahoma State is probably the best program of the 6 "have nots" and they might have a shot if they played in the North Division, but they're fighting a losing battle against Texas & Oklahoma. Missouri is not that great of a program -- they do have a shot if they can win some year when the North is down and somehow pull an upset in the Championship game, but that's hardly a "legitimate" shot. A BCS bowl is a pipe dream for Colorado and ISU at this point, and is out of the realm of possibilities for Baylor.

Quite frankly I see three Big 12 programs with "legitimate" BCS claims for the next 5+ years, not ten as Griffin writes. Heck, the "big two" make up 17% of our conference and have gotten 63% of our BCS bids...and he is writing that the Big 12 has a "balance of achievement"???

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

He's defending the "system" for whatever reason. Doesn't like what he saw in the Tribune. Maybe it hit too close to home..

I agree with Monty. KU made a BCS bowl after going 6-6 and surviving Terry Allen, while OSU, and TT have not = besides OU & UT, everyone has a chance.

Re: Tim Griffin Comments on the Ames Tribune

I actually do agree that Utah, Boise, TCU have a better shot at a BCS bowl than a team like us. Let's say we go undefeated through the regular season and then lose to Oklahoma who had beat Texas. Do you really think it would be us in a BCS game over one of those undefeated teams? Hell no. It would be Texas and Oklahoma. Look what happened last year, TT was left out. I am in no way saying this is wrong. I actuallyu thought last year that there was no reasonable argument to leave Utah out of the National Championship. Now, they may have no shot at a title game, where we would if we went completely undefeated, but the way it looks right now, if we have one loss and don't win the B12 championship, we won't be in a BCS bowl. Disclaimer: I do realize that my scenerio most likely won't happen, I was just making a point.

I think college football very much has a haves/have nots thing going on. If you don't have the tradition, it's tougher to break through than a sport like basketball. It's been done (See FSU, Iowa, and some more), but it's much tougher to do it.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

7 Big 12 teams have played in the BCS.
    I overlooked Colorado.

    Let's re-list them:

    -------
these teams will play in BCS games almost every year:
    Oklahoma - 7
    Texas - 3
    -------
this team may have a shot at a BCS game once in awhile:
    Nebraska - 3
    -------
these teams have played in one BCS game -- in fluke seasons -- will return about once every 100 years:
    Colorado - 1
    Kansas - 1
    Kansas State - 1
    Texas A&M - 1
    -----
these teams will be lucky to have a fluke season and play in a BCS game once every 100 years:
    ISU - 0
    Missouri - 0
    Oklahoma State - 0
    Texas Tech - 0
    -------
this team will never play in a BCS game:
    Baylor - 0

So where is all the "balance" that Griffin is talking about???

C'mon...you can give them better odds than that. The BCS as only been around for 11 years, and these teams have made it already...

Do you seriously see any of those teams going to BCS bowls in at least the next 5-10 years? The one time they made it was a fluke (in every case) and they've never been close in any other year.

Texas A & M has the tradition and money to do it.
