OU may have to vacate wins- Question

I realize this would not effect ISU but I was reading that OU may have to vacate wins if that player is found ineligible. Question- if a school has to vacate wins do the schools they played get to add wins to their official record? I know it is a cheap thrill (or no thrill) but every little bit helps, and in 15 years no none will remember who really won a given game anyway.

I think so, as Colorado had to vacate a win against ISU a few years back

I don't know the answer to your question. But IMO, those Ws should turn into Ls and visa-versa for their opponents AND something laid down for the current team/staff/school .... otherwise this doesn't do a whole lot.

Re: OU may have to vacate wins- Question

I think the school has the option to go back and change things, but I don't know if teams ever really do that.

Are all the teams that Memphis beat in the NCAA Tourney two years ago going to go back in and switch the losses to wins? Might look at little weird that they ended the season with a win in the NCAA Tournament, but didn't make the Final Four...

Re: OU may have to vacate wins- Question

The NCAA has said that if Memphis had won the basketball championship game in it's now vacated 2008 season, that no winner would go down in the record books for that season; no other team could claim the championship.

I assume the same rules apply for this situation.

Easy for the NCAA to say that considering that Memphis WASN'T the champion that year. My guess is if Memphis was the champ the NCAA wouldn't have vacated wins - having no champion on the books because that school had to vacate wins would be too big of a black eye for the NCAA to handle. I think they'd rather deal with the black eye of having a dirty champion.

There have been two games forfeited to ISU after the fact -- Kansas 1980 and Colorado 1997 -- both because of the other team using an ineligible player. Those forfeits are not reflected in ISU's official record.

Usually it's just denoted in the official record with an asterisk saying the win was later forfeited to the other team because of (insert reason here). I thought it happened to ISU three times, Kansas & Colorado mentioned earlier and Nebraska. I thought Nebraska had to forfeit the game to ISU after the 1991 season for using an ineligible player, but I could be wrong

As stated by others here, the answer is no. It's basically like the game was never played. Alabama was just forced to vacate 21 wins under former coach Shula. The wins come off the record, but are NOT changed to losses. No wins are awarded to the records of the teams that Bama beat and has to vacate.

One thing is for sure. Bob Stoops will have to vacate his house. The AP reported today that he and his wife are getting divorced.

The official all time series record is 85-16-2, and there have been 103 games played.

...according to Nebraska, who takes credit for a 10-9 victory in 1907.

According to Iowa State and Walter Camp (the longtime rules committee guru), ISU won that game 13-10. Referees weren't aware of the rules regarding field goals/dropkicks, and disallowed a legal ISU kick.

(Field goals were worth 4 points then.)
