    Gene Speaks

Kicking it with Gene Chizik, Part I - SEC - ESPN

Even though your record at Iowa State wasn't very good, the fact that you'd been a head coach had to work in your favor, didn't it?
GC: For me personally, as far as what kind of head coach I am, those two years at Iowa State were invaluable to me. Auburn hired a better coach after I'd been at Iowa State for two years trying to rebuild a program that was way down than they would have if they had hired a defensive coordinator from Texas. It's not even close, not even close.

Well, he didn't lie here. There is no doubt he's a different coach now than he was the day he was introduced in Hilton.

Look at the staff he hired.

    Re: Gene Speaks

I thought this was fairly conceded when I read it, but I guess I can't disagree with it either...

A lot of people were caught off guard by your hiring at Auburn, in part because of your 5-19 record at Iowa State. Did you feel like you were right in the middle of that process all along?
GC: No question about it. It's unique how things work. If I was the defensive coordinator at Texas and the assistant head coach at Texas, then it wouldn't have caught anybody off guard. Let's be realistic about it, and I understand that.

Hopefully PR's learning curve is much faster. He already has a better idea of what it's like here.

Wonder how much practice time he's spent on teaching Auburn players how to line up their helmets in a straight line.

People need to get over the Gene bashing. Two years at the helm proves nothing. He's gone. We upgraded. Move on...

I agree. If he was really a bad coach at ISU, we wouldn't have given him a 2-year contract extension right before he quit.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

    Re: Gene Speaks

First - I still hate Gene for what he did.

In April I took a job in Davenport out of necessity. I knew going into it that the second I could land a good position back in DSM, I would take it - period. Earlier this week, I did just that. I had no loyalty to the company in Davenport and didn't feel bad for leaving prematurely. I performed far better than Gene, at least I had that going for me.

Is what I did really that much different than what Gene did? Yes, his was on a much bigger scale and public - but the premise was the same.

I still despise him, I just have a slightly better understanding for it.

Once he left, I really did not care about Gene leaving. I actually think he did it in a pretty positive manner from an ISU perspective... quick and strong (expect for him trying to take a couple players).
I think it is too different from your situation to really compare, but did you tell the job in Davenport you were firmly entrenched right before leaving?

Yeah, I tend to forget about that since they ended up staying. Overall though, he left so quickly, and broke it off with the team so bluntly, it created an environment conducive to bringing the team together, rather than divide.
