    San Diego interested in Ferentz?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6470314?MSNHPHMA
"Another name to keep a close eye on is Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. Chargers GM A.J. Smith is a huge fan of Ferentz and would easily be able to sell him to the public, the media and the players. Plus, Smith makes scouting trips to Iowa every year, which he doesn't do with many other schools.
Hadn't heard that from anyone. Interesting...

Anyone think it holds any water?

Sure it hold water. If he comes to Iowa to make scouting trips, and snuggles with Kirk. They got rid of the wrong guy. They should have canned AJ Smith.

this would be "the job" to get for any coach - if they are really interested I can't imagine a better offer for the Captain ever coming along. If he really wants to make the jump the NFL, here it is.

I agree, especially about it being a great job right now for any coach.

Much credit to Marty, because before he landed in S.D. - it wasn't a great job for any coach.

It would just be one more reason for me to strongly dislike him, GO BRONCOS!!!

I agree, if he has any aspirations of being an NFL coach or winning a Super Bowl, this would be the best route...

Why would he want to go there when they fire their coach after a 14-2 season? He already makes as much as they would probably pay him plus he has a lifetime contract at Iowa(job security). Dont get me wrong I would like to see Iowa go through a coaching change but if I was him I would stay put.

I agree. But unfortunately, Smith gets a TON of cred for deciding on the right moves for the draft and free agency. He might even be a bigger reason for the Chargers' success than Schottenheimer.

As far as Ferentz goes, I'm not sure what his goals are. Some guys are content being college coaches their whole lives (Lord knows there's more job security), and some wanna make it in the big time. I do agree though, he'd be hard-pressed to find a better situation to walk into.

Marty didn't get fired for only going 14-2....he got fired because him and AJ Smith never ever got along.

Re: San Diego interested in Ferentz?

I would think that the one year extension that they offered him a little ways back has a lot to do with this. One year? After what he did there. That seemed insulting. I'm sure that only added fuel to the fire.

From what I've hear it came down to replacement of asst. coaches. Then again, you can take that how you want. We all know how well these "experts" can predict things.

Re: San Diego interested in Ferentz?

Let's hope that Capt. Kirk says he has not been contacted and has no interest in the job. Then we know it is a matter of time.

And then--- we can start the DM to Iowa rumor. This could be fun.

Re: San Diego interested in Ferentz?

I would think if I were Ferentz, I would rather take over a program towards the bottom that can only go up. Looking at this situation where fans are upset because Smith fired Marty who went 14-2 last year, the incoming coach had better up the stats from last year, otherwise the fans are going to be upset with him too even though it should be Smith they are upset with when they go 13-3 or worse next year.

The fan will only remember their anger towards Marty being canned last year and you are setting yourself up for a bigtime fallout that possibly could blacklist you from NFL and/or going back to the college ranks. I look at this job vacancy as a no win situation for anyone that takes it, unless they win the Super Bowl NEXT YEAR.

Although I would love to watch the Squawkeyes replace their hero with anothe Zero like Alfraud.

I look at it like an all-win situation....$$$$$.

I actually heard on FSR that a potential number that could be offered to Pete Carroll was $8 for 4 years.

I don't think Kirk would get near that amount but if I was Pete Carroll and that offer was on the table, how could you pass that up??

That is a great point you make. This looks like the perfect job. Team filled with young talent, great city, etc.

However, they just canned a coach that went 14-2. Even though it was for personal reasons - they still fired the guy that helped build the Chargers up to a AFC force.

The new coach coming in will certainly be measured up to Marty and if he can't duplicate or exceed what Marty was able to do - the fans will howl. Moreso in the direction of A.J. Smith & Friends - but the coach will deal with more than his share of it too.

    Nice job pointing that out.
