    Big "Z" needs more $$

He may deserve it, but this is unfortunate for sure. The cubs have avoided arbitration with every player under GM Jim Hendry, hopefully they can do the same here.

Cubs' Zambrano: 'I must go' if no deal; Seeks Zito Money

MESA, Ariz. -- After announcing at the Cubs Convention he wouldn't discuss a contract extension with the Cubs if they don't come to an agreement before Opening Day, Carlos Zambrano said Monday he's gone if he has to play out the season.

Zambrano, seeking a long-term deal with an annual salary in the range of Barry Zito's $18 million-a-year contract with San Francisco, dropped the bombshell in an interview with WGN-Ch. 9.

"I'm ready to sign, and I would do my job anyway with the Cubs this year," Zambrano said. "Whatever happens, I don't want to know [anything] about a contract during the season. I want to sign with the Cubs before the season starts. If they don't sign me, sorry, but I must go. That's what Carlos Zambrano thinks."

The Cubs can still negotiate with Zambrano if he becomes a free agent. They re-signed Aramis Ramirez in November after he considered free agency.

Zambrano recently requested $15.5 million in arbitration. The Cubs offered $11.025 million, a sizable gap that could lead to an arbitration hearing Feb. 20.

Asked at the Cubs Convention about his upcoming free agency, Zambrano repeatedly said "This is a business" and that Zito's seven-year, $126 million deal helped raise his market value.

As the Cubs' most valuable pitcher, Zambrano can make the Cubs squirm. He apparently intends to do just that.

"When you're a great pitcher and have talent, you deserve the money no matter who gives it to you," he said. "Zito is a great pitcher. Good for him he has that contract, and I think that will help me.

"[Cubs general manager] Jim [Hendry] spent a lot of money. I hope he has more for 'Big Z.'"

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Over the last three seasons Z does have a better overall record than Zito...so I guess Zambrano will get his payday due to market factors.

If you think for a second the Twins would pick up Zambrano you're crazy... they're going to have to save every penny and THEN some just to have a chance to keep Santana after this coming season...

We need to keep Big Z on the Cubs. He's our only somewhat reliable starter......except when he goes on binges of sending e-mails to his brother.......

    Gotta keep him.

Mario "One Pitch" Rivera of Yankees also needs more money to be respected.

Re: Big "Z" needs more $$

The comments he made concerns me some. Granted athletes are greedy in nature but he should have been a little better with the way he came across regarding his contract situation. Makes him look like an ungrateful and greedy player that just cares about how much he's getting paid. Aramis Ramirez just gave the Cubs a hometown discount when he could have made millions more by becoming a free agent. Carlos should take note that if you want the best players on your team everyone can't get paid top dollar unless you are the Yankees.

Granted I think he's worth Zito money and hope the Cubs lock him up because he's one of the best pitchers in the game I think. But if the Cubs pay up, the money better not go to his head and the Cubs better get some 20 win seasons out of him to justify the big payday he has coming.

And ditto what JR said, no way the Twins could afford him without dumping payroll of their good players. I could see the 2 New York teams going hard after him though.

I wouldn't mind if the cubs pick up Santana next year and let Zambrano go. The 15.5 million arbitration number is crazy for a first year eligible player. I think he's going to demand at least Zito's money for his contract

Zambrano is good but he still has control issues from time to time and walks alot of batters. I definitely see where he is coming from though. I would be ****** sitting around watching all the people the cubs have signed and all the money they have spent. Hell Ted Lilly is getting 10 million and he hasn't proven anything in the league. Just watch, the Cubs will lose him and he will win 5 Cy Youngs playing somewhere else

If we need extra cash I say the Cubs let go of Woods. He is never healthy and at some point you have to wonder if they'll ever have him for a full season ever again.

Ummm, Wood took a 1 year deal for like 1.75 mil this season. That's pretty cheap even for a reliever which he will be this year. If he stays healthy that is a bargain.

Re: Big "Z" needs more $$

If Wood stays healthing I believe he will make more in incentives than what his contract is worth. But yes, that is cheap for a pitcher.

Ted Lilly recieved so much because the market value is going up for pitchers. Billy Wagner started it, Zito continued it, and Big Z is determined to follow the norm. There wasn't much out there for quality starters this year, so teams were stuck with over paying some players to attarct them to their club. Look at how much they are paying for Marquis after the last couple seasons he has had.

It is buisness, unfortunately it comes at a heftier price than in the past.

Knock on Wood, Prior to last year, I would have given him a big Z for effort.

Re: Big "Z" needs more $$

Zambrano does deserve a contract from the Cubs. He's been just as important over the last several years as any other player. We roll him out for 35 starts a year... when was the last pitcher we had that we could do that with?
I say take the middle of the Cubs off er and his arbitration number, multiply it by 6 (13.5x6 = 81 mil) make it an even 80 (discount for getting a long term contract in a place where he's loved) and then work in incentives for Cy Young awards, World Series appearances, World Series MVP, All Star games, etc. That could make the offer worth about $15 mil per year over the whole contract.
That gives him to the Cubs until hes 31, and who knows from there. The Cubs can get that done...and Z couldn't complain!
