    Well said.

Athletics is like advertising for the University.

Wow, that is some cutting-edge journalism there. I fully expect a retraction from Miles now with the caveat that he is now willing to double-down his contributions to University sports here in Iowa.

Re: Board of Regents: Tail Wagging the Dog in ISU Affairs

Solid reporting Jon. I get tired of people bashing college sports as a waste of taxpayer money. I saw an article within the last month stating that the Oklahoma Athletic Department gave $3M in surplus funds to the academic portion of the university. How sweet would it be to have that kind of athletic budget??

    Nice job Jon.

I hate to be the one to toss team-favoritism into this... but I will anyway.

Does anyone really think Miles makes such a statement if the hawkeye athletic program received funds from the University?

    I don't either.

I don't think that is wholly unfair...but to be honest, this sentiment started with his predecessor, Michael Gartner. And Iowa WAS receiving state funds back then.

It might literally rain cats and dogs tomorrow because I agree with every word, Mr. Miller.

I don't want to get personal about this, but does any one else think that this Mr. Miles is some nerdy bookworm who holds a grudge against athtletics because he was always the last one chosen in kick ball when he was a kid?

Seriously, the amount of money he is talking about is a small drop in the bucket budget-wise.

Nice job Jon. Has any study been done that shows how much indirect money athletics bring to a University.

And to follow up, what surprises me about all this is Michael Gartner's attitude. He is a part owner of the Iowa Cubs, so I would think he would understand that a good sports team (or teams) can bring in revenue.

I kind of doubt that Iowa doesn't get any general fund money. They just hide it better.
