Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

Yesterday, I wrote about how the Kent State game will be crucial during the 2009 Iowa State football season. My point was that it is on the road and directly after the Iowa game. I think we'll learn a lot about the team on Sept. 19.

    Some agreed, some didn't.

BFross wrote: Why does everyone think that Kent State is a quality MAC team. Last year they were 4-8 (3-6 in the MAC). In 2007 they were 3-9 (1-7). In 2006 they were 6-6 (5-3).

Just because they beat us in 2007 doesn't make them a quality opponent. We break our road losing streak against the Golden Flashes this year.

Solid Post BFross. I now pose this question Cyclone fans.

How do you view this game?

How should Cyclone fans approach this one?

I'm curious to get your thoughts.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

View: Must win. In order to start gaining any respect, we have to beat the teams we should, whether on the road or at the Jack. We have to play with a sense of urgency. No reason with as many upperclassmen as we have that we can't beat them, even if it is in a shootout. We also need to get that damn road game monkey off our backs. We have upperclassmen who have never won on the road. Needs to change.

Fans should have the same attitude. Expect to win. Show we have some life on the road (although it may be against an inferior opponent we beat handily last season). Heck, go to the game! Tix are only $10!

This is a win, mark it down. They still have Jarvis, but the QB Julian Edleman is the one that created problems for us, he was too elusive. We manhandled them last year with worse team.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

I think this will be a big game, but I'm not sure if I'd say that this game will make or break the season. I fully expect our kids to improve throughout the year, and I expect that they will go into every game expecting to compete and win. With all that said, I think they've got a great shot at winning this one.

I can't imagine it is going to be a walk-off(can't remember in our history that any road game has been easy)...I think Vegas will have the spread around 8-9 points, does that sound right?

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

I think it is going to be tough, I remember the last time we lost to them. It wasn't that they were that much better, it was that our defense gave up big plays and our offense only had about 10 plays to go on. Our offense has much better coaches, we have better talent now, and our defense will hopefully be improved. I expect the offense to be able to make big plays by this game and think we will win. Getting over the hump on the road may be our biggest challenge for that game. I think the team will be ready for this game.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

I think it's a game could easily get tripped up on. The team won just 5 games over the past 2 seasons and lost to Kent State, UNI, and Toledo in 2007 so until they prove they can beat up on the lesser teams again any game is a possible loss in my mind right now. We still need to win game 1 before we worry about Kent State.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

It should be a win. We should be able to sleep walk through it. But we CAN'T. If ISU does try to sleep through it, we'll get beat.

Hell, when was the last time ISU won on the road? Army 3 years ago?

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

Echo IcSyU: We have to consistently beat the inferior opponents before we can contend in the Big 12 conference. This is a road game and a win will be a huge stepping stone for the season.

I think it's the key match-up of the year due to our road woes and it's placement on the schedule.

If we have any hope of getting to a bowl it's through our non-conf. schedule. We must beat NDSU, Kent St., and Army. Iowa is always up in the air. 3-4 wins prior to K-State and I think our confidence will be ready for the Big 12.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

kent state is a very crutial game this year. Beat Iowa and you have to prove it wasnt a fluke by pounding Kent. Lose to Iowa and you have to rebound on the road or it is going to be a long, long season. I look at Kent State and K-State and the two most important games of the season.

Yes, I know we have to address one team each week and not get ahead. However; when looking at the season 15 days out you can see that those two early games have the potential to set the tone. Regardless of the Iowa game, if you can get to kansas at 4-1 or 5-0 look out, there could be 7 wins out there. Get to Kansas as 3-2 or 2-3 and things are a whole lot different. For the record I picked a 6 win season, so I am not here saying 8-4 or anything like that. We were 2-10 last year, and until we prove otherwise that is how we are viewed.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

Kent State is a must win. This game has "trap game" written all over it. The game after Iowa, we're playing on a MAC team's field where you know they will be ready to play, we have struggled terribly on the road, etc. There's not a lot of positives going into that game. I think this game will be a true test to see what kind of a coach we have in CPR.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

    What I'd like to see:
    a) Pound 'em early and get the lead
    b) Keep pounding away and go into half up 14-17
    c) Come out from half and put 'em away (up 21-24 right off the bat)

It's been a long time since we've seen an Iowa State team go for the kill instead of just trying not to lose. If we can get a shot to put someone away, we have gotta start learning how to do it. Come out after half against Kansas last year and throw a TD on the board, changes the entire second half. Act alive last year at UNLV in the first half, different game. Quit letting teams hang around and just go into games wanting to blow teams out, not just hang on for a win.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

Echoing everyone else here. A must win game if we hope to gain the confidence to win in the Big XII and go to a bowl game.

This is one of those classic ISU trap games though. If we beat Iowa then it is set up for the classic letdown (ala Toledo 2007) and if we lose it is setup for us to come out flat (ala UNLV 2008).

All I can say is from what I have seen of Rhoads that big number 17 will be front and center the week leading up to Kent St and I can't help but think these guys will come storming out of the gate regardless of what happens the previous week against Iowa.

Re: Kent State Game --- What is YOUR Take?

We have a better shot against Iowa than Kent State imo.
