Moving to Chicagoland in 2 weeks

I just got a job out in the SW suburbs of Chicago, in the Orland Park area. I'm kinda sad that I will be missing most of the football games and basketball, but I guess I'll have to deal with that. Hopefully I'll make it back for a couple.
Does anybody know of any good apartments or areas to live in that area? And also, a rough guess on the cost of living compared to Des Moines?

Did you try a cost of living index calculator? Crap like this is what convinced me to stay in Iowa:

Cost of Living Comparison: compare Des Moines, Iowa to Orland Park, Illinois

I am not sure how far you would want to drive to work, but if you go south on I-57 or I-45 a bit further out of the suburbs into the more rural areas things will be cheaper. Peotone is not a bad little town, neither is manhattan. Of course, if you have kids peotone is a small school and manhattan gets sent to a huge one.

Lived in Crestwood, just down the road, while I was playing ball out there and it was very affordable, good food all around...

That's a nice little website. Thanks! It seems as though housing is the biggest difference in the two areas. As of right now, I'm just looking at apts. It seems like most decent apartments run about 200-300 more per month than they do in DM and Ames. (at least in the area I am looking)

I don't have any kids. Just myself, which will make things a lot easier in terms of being flexible. I'd like to stay in the suburbs, for now. And commuting to work isn't that big of a deal, but I'd like to find something within 15-20 minutes of my work.

Thats not too far from Orland Park. I'll have to check that area out.

Also, are there any places that I should really avoid? In terms of crime and violence?

Anything West of Cicero is pretty nice, no problems at all... My first year we lived in a kinda rough apartment complex in Alsip but still didn't have any problems as we got to know the neighbors pretty well...

Right around orland is pretty good, as is Tinley. I would not go to Matteson or Harvey under any circumstances. The further east you go that way, the worst it will get. Any other direction is generally good, depending on how far you go.

    Good to know. Thanks!
I'm thinking about going out there again this weekend and checking out some apts.

Oak Lawn isn't too far from there either and not bad, thats normally where we went out and stuff... A little younger crowd with the college right there.

Nice website. I couldn't believe how much a difference it made just to switch Des Moines to Clive and comparing to the same city.

Gary, IN is a more expensive place to live than Detroit, Mi.....who'da thunk?
