Regents have goal of no taxpayer money for athletics

Register Exclusive: Regents have goal of no taxpayer money for athletics | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

I believe this is a good goal in the long turn, but I have to imagine that the athletics department probably generates more than $3 million a year for the university.

It would be interesting to see what kind of economic effect the athletic dept. has on the university.

Iowa State’s athletic budget is expected to draw $3 million in general fund support for its $43.3 million budget this year
$3 million ISU would have to make up, where do you think that money is going to come from? Increased ticket prices....this isnt good

I believe much of that three million is in Hilton support, which will be slowly reduced to nothing over the next few years. This is part of the reason that the athletic department is trying to get concerts established at Hilton.

If you divide 3 million by 50,000 football seats and figure 6 home games, it's $10 a ticket. You could spread the cost out even more if you added in basketball tickets. Not a big deal in my opinion.

That comes out to an ADDITIONAL $120 to purchase two season tickets. It may not be a big deal to you, but many others are not so fortunate.

I wish the NCAA had enough guts to actually address the out-of-control athletic budgets that exist at most member insitutions. The system that's in place is totally out of control. Maybe congress could takle this issue after they solve the health-care crisis.

$10 more per ticket is a huge deal. Some of these games are already $75. And this product is not worth $75 yet.

Why? If ours wasn't the lowest in the Big 12 would you want them to tackle the issue? And why do you want congress to look at things? the reason things are so screwed up in this country can be pointed at our own gov't.

Why is it that its this awful thing for taxes to support college athletics, but cities and states around the country pour millions into pro teams, and its not only ok, but expected.

Because the Regents are continuing their push to make ISU and UNI completely irrelevant. It started with Marvin Pomerantz. If he had had his way, you would have graduated from University of Iowa-Ames.

Re: Regents have goal of no taxpayer money for athletics

I think this is a great idea. Sure it might hurt a little in the short term but I have to think this was ISU's goal anyway. I don't blame people who don't want their tax money being spent on million dollar coaches salaries and things like that. Personally I don't mind spending money on those things so that is why we donate to the athletic department.

And thats why they only chip in a small amount.

On the other hand, athletics draws a lot of people into the university, both as potential students and potential donors to the university at large. It keeps alumni connected to the university, which over the long run means more $$ for the university as a whole, not just the athletic department. A small amount chipped into the AD is as good as marketing or fundraising $$ for the university.
