Former Duke PG Starting QB at Syracuse

Former Duke Blue Devils point guard Greg Paulus named Syracuse Orange starting quarterback - ESPN

Can someone explain to me how this works if he played BB at Duke for 4 years? Does NCAA not count years of eligibility in different sports?

You get 5 years of eligibility, so he can switch to football for a year and be on scholarship.

Stevie Johnson did the same thing for ISU not too far back.

    Beat me to it.

Remember Stevie Johnson, he played basketball for four years at ISU and then played football for one a few years back.

My first thought is that it does not say much for whomever else is on roster at QB spot. They are getting beat out by guy who has never taken a snap in college. If the kid wants to be a hero on a crappy FB team he didn't have to transfer.

Yea, my ISU sports history from before I got here in '05 is a little sketchy, but that's pretty cool.

Paulus was a 5-star QB coming out of HS. He could have played virtually anywhere. I read that Paulus, while playing exclusively basketball, was still throwing quite a few passes over the last couple years. His brother is a QB at UNC and apparently, Greg had been working out with him.

It said he was a grad student now so the move may have actually been academically motivated.

I love to dog the guy, but this is truly remarkable. 4 years off and picking up one of the arguably toughest positions in sports at the D1 level.

5*'s or not that would still be an extremely tough task. It leaves me asking the question, how terrible were Syracuses other QBs?

He must be a grad student in order to be able to play. The move is in no way academically motivated. When he expressed interest in doing this many college coaches called to recruit him to their grad student program. He chose Syracuse because it was pretty much the only place that could promise him the starting QB spot assuming he didn't completely forget how to play. If I remember correctly Michigan was also pretty high on him.
