    GPS map updates

I purchased a low end Garmin GPS unit over a year ago. Now there is a map update for $99.99. Who would buy this if the unit itself only sold for $120 on sale? Has anyone downloaded a new map for this kind of price? I would think they could sell more updates if they made the price more reasonable.

    Re: GPS map updates

I don't own one, but as I understand it, the "normal" price is $75-100 for map updates.

I think it depends on what areas you're going to, in DSM I'm not sure I need the map updates.

Garmin does a lifetime update package as well dont they? Its actually cheaper to buy the lifetime than it is individual map updates.

Garmin has a lifetime update card for around $89 but it only works on that one unit.

Ah mine is a 255w and I got this offer. I thought it was a complete garmin thing, but apparently only for some models. FYI if you are into borrowing from the internet, you can probably find free maps...;)

    Re: GPS map updates

The Garmin maps, I believe, are proprietary. So, there may be a way to hack them without paying, but it's probably painful if you're not too techy.

    Re: GPS map updates

This drives me crazy! I tried updating my dads garmin only to find out that they don't have free updates. My sister can update her tomtom for free why does garmin have to be such pains in the behind?

I doubt if your sister is actually getting free MAP updates from Tom Tom. They have a similar service as Garmin that requires you to pay for MAP updates.

At TomTom, we always install the latest map on your device. But if a new map is released within 30 days of first using your device, we'll give it to you free of charge.

That sounds like Garmin as well, but i think Garmin just gives your first upgrade free so you can cash in whenever.

I need to figure out what GarmiN does too. I picked up a nuvi 255w last week but I have no way to connect to pc. Although it does have a card slot. Micro sd maybe?

I think you buy pre-loaded SD's with maps for that model...and I think that's one of the models that for a one-time fee you get that updates for life for that device.

It connects to the computer with a usb cable. In order to update it, youll have to register it on their website and then download the updater software. If you dont, you can still plug it into your pc and it will install itself as a flash drive. You can add cars and voices to it free. Its pretty fun. I have ecto-1 as my car, but have used a tie fighter as well.

Since no USB cable came with it I assume this means it's an extra to buy.
