Tiger Woods fined by PGA Tour

Tiger Woods didn't take much time to celebrate his 70th career victory on the PGA Tour, and not just because he was on Hazeltine National at dawn Monday to get ready for the PGA Championship.

Woods, so careful to avoid controversy throughout his career, stepped out of character after winning the Bridgestone Invitational.

One question into his interview, he shifted attention away from his late heroics at Firestone ó an 8-iron from 178 yards over the water that stopped a foot from the hole for birdie ó by blaming the anticlimactic finish on a rules official.

Woods was perturbed that he and Padraig Harrington were put on the clock at the pivotal 16th hole Sunday, and suggested that Harrington was rushed into three poor shots that led to triple bogey. What had been one of the most compelling duels of the year gave way to another inevitable Woods victory.

Not only did Woods identify the rules official ó European Tour chief referee John Paramor ó he later shared with the media what he told Harrington on the 18th green.

"Like I was telling him out there, 'I'm sorry that John got in the way of a great battle,' because it was such a great battle for 16 holes, and we're going at it head-to-head, and unfortunately that happened."

Paramor and Slugger White, the PGA Tour rules official in charge at Firestone, defended the decision as simply enforcing a policy.

Woods will be fined for his public criticism of a rules official, one PGA Tour official said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the tour does not announce fines

Dude, if he's getting fined because he doesn't think they guy he was playing with was treated fairly, I have no problem with that.

That's not whining, that's being a good sport.

Heres my question, Why in the hell did they get put on the clock if they were the last group out there? There was nobody behind them that they were holding up. That, and they only had 3 friggin holes left. Let them finish for god's sake.

It's pretty much worth saluting him for getting fined for being a good sport. Nice work from him.

Woods had no right to publicly criticize an official, who is simply enforcing the rules. Good god, they took four and a half hours to play 18 holes!
Why does he feel the need to "bond" with his opponent by criticizing the PGA at a press conference? If he really thought the rules should not have been enforced, a private conversation would be more appropriate than the grandstanding...

Re: Tiger Woods fined by PGA Tour

I was watching quite a bit of this Sunday and I felt they were playing pretty slow. But I don't have a problem with Tiger saying what he said. I tend to agree with him that Paddy rushed on 16 and it contributed to his blow up. Like someone said earlier in this thread, they were the last group. The rules official needs to pipe down.

Re: Tiger Woods fined by PGA Tour

Is it better for CBS who pays the Tour millions that Tiger is in a tussle through the entire round?
I know I tuned out after 16, when Tiger's in a battle it is great for the sport and for ratings.
Having said that, the official should be fined for stupidity, if anyone.

It should be noted that they played in barely over 4 hours. Guess what, I played in an open last weekend and it took me almost 5. A four hour round on the PGA Tour is almost unheard of. Remember, these guys are doing this as a career, not just to get out of the house. I don't know what you do for a living, but imagine a difficult task that you had to complete and your supervisor coming and saying, "Sorry, you're behind, speed it up" when all the time you have spent had been well spent and not wasted. So then you have to hurry up and as you hurry up your quality goes down to a point where you then lose out on a promotion. Then you come to find out the only reason you had to hurry was so that your boss could look over the work and get out of work just so he could make his 3:30 tee time. Now I realize this may be a stretch for some, however I feel it is a pretty comparible situation.

I think Tiger, in this case, should be given a lot of credit. He did not complain because it affected him. He stood up for Paddy. I think it goes to show his sportsmanship. I believe this was a very classy move. He could have said something like "Great players overcome those things" or somthing like that. Instead, knowing he would be reprimanded, he came to bat for Paddy. I applaude him. One more reason to be a Tiger fan.

    This.

This is also why we don't call out the mods in a post. We PM them. Tiger could learn something from CF.

4 and half hours is certainly not a ridiculous amount of time to play 18 holes. That it about what it takes everyone. I would bet that the average is somewhere at or above 4 hours.

Re: Tiger Woods fined by PGA Tour

I applaud for him sticking up for Padraig. Thought it was more him complaining that they told him to speed up than actually defending Padraig.

They weren't playing within the rules of the PGA. Doesn't matter if they are the last group or not. I'm also glad that the PGA wasn't afraid to tell Tiger to speed up and fine him. I've always felt he was given preferential treatment from the PGA. Glad to see he isn't above the law.

This is golf, not soccer, football, or basketball. There shouldn't be a 'clock'. This was a dumb decision by a PGA official.
