    Message from Pollard today

So, I just saw an email pop up from Jamie, and immediately started to get optimistic about it either being a) a donor announcement (best case), or b)current facilities upgrades update (still a good thing). But instead, it is a message from him pimping the upcoming 'Sugarland' concert. I guess I ambivalent to this, but is this really where we are at right now - our athletics department rounding up the troops for a country music concert? Ticket sales must really be suffering.

Before anyone reminds me - yes I know that ISU is now responsible for the revenue and expenses of these events, but still. Here is the message:

    August 10, 2009
    Dear M*****,
We are very excited to share with you that the popular country act Sugarland will be performing at Hilton Coliseum on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. Sugarland is two-time consecutive reigning Country Music Association Vocal Duo of the Year and a Grammy Award winner.
Hilton Coliseum has seen its share of concerts over the years but unfortunately the frequency of these type of performances have declined in recent times due in large part to the newer and larger venues built in Des Moines and Omaha. In order to attract acts such as Sugarland, we need to show the promoters that our community can support performers of this caliber.
The purpose of my letter is to request your help in attracting future shows to Ames by buying a ticket to the Sugarland concert. Sugarland tickets are available starting at just $35.00. You can purchase tickets to the show by visiting ticketmaster.com or cyclones.com, or by calling the Athletics Ticket Office at 888-478-2925 or 515-294-1816.
In addition, as an added bonus, we will provide every person that purchases a Sugarland ticket a complimentary ticket to an Iowa State Men's Basketball game. You can choose from one of two games: ISU versus Houston on Sunday, January 3rd or versus North Dakota State on Saturday, January 9th.
We hope you will take advantage of this tremendous opportunity to see both Sugarland and our men's basketball team in performance.
    Sincerely,
    Jamie Pollard
    Director of Athletics

Can't argue with cross selling. If this was a non-country act I would probably buy a ticket just for the free basketball ticket.

Those are games that are during break, and traditionally very poorly attended.

But I agree - we seem to be giving alot away to promote other sales.

Not bad if you like country music, you get a concert and a ball game for 35 bucks.

    Re: Message from Pollard today

I was hoping this e-mail was to offer some discounted tickets for Cyclone Club members as my wife has been bugging me about this concert for weeks...We'll be getting season b-ball tickets, so this doesn't really help much

Now that Hilton is being run by the athletic department, I'm guessing that the AD has some fairly big stakes in making concerts successful.

Also, I'm sure that Jamie didn't actually do much himself other than agree to attach his name to the email. If it brings in money to the dept. and most of the work is done by someone else, why not?

Ooo. I want tickets for that NDSU game.

Before I get blasted, I don't have a problem with any of this.

The Sugarland Concert was originally scheduled for Oct. 2, 2008, and this is a reschedule. Don't remember why it wasn't held them, but it wasn't an ISU/facility reason.

It's probably due to the pimping of the MBB game. I'd do it if I could stand Sugarland

I don't disagree. I was just agreeing with the OP in that it would seem to reflect poorly sales, or anticipate poor sales since bball tickets haven't even gone on sale yet, in that we're giving away tickets for two basketball games, essentially gave away two football games to get an iowa ticket. Lots of fire sales going on.

    Re: Message from Pollard today

I love Sugarland - and already have tickets. Paid a lot more than 35 bucks. Jennifer Nettles is tremendous.
However, Jamie made his own bed in this by not letting a management company run Hilton - now they're alone by themselves, with no "connections" with promoters and therefore not a part of any regular tour network with big-name performers.
This just in: most university-owned arenas are still run by management firms...

I had tix for this concert last year before they had to cancel. Does anyone know if I can just use the tix from last year or do I have to try and switch them out. I was told that my tix would still be good, but I wanted to make sure.

One of the members of Sugarland was ill if I recall and they had to cancel several tour dates.

With Wells Fargo Arena 30 minutes south, I'm afraid this a fight that the AD's office isn't going to win. The days of big acts in Hilton are over IMO.
