Interesting Read in Spokane Paper Before Walden was Hired

I hope this link works. I was looking for some pictures of ISU jerseys from Walden's era and instead I found this link. Very interesting read about Walden's thoughts on the ISU job and who was on our short list back then when we fired Criner.

It's the next page over... All you have to do is scroll over. It's in the middle of the page on the extreme right side of next page.

Took me a second to figure it out. Look for the thumbnail image on the right side of the screen. Click and drag the blue box to the right and about two thirds of the way down the image. At least that's how it worked on the computer I'm on now.

Glen Mason at ISU... That was an interesting thought.

I surfed back and forth the first time and didn't see it. Now it's easy. I'm a loser

Nice article. Looking at names like Glen Mason, Walt Harris and Al Groh tells me that we were looking at some pretty talented guys early on in their coaching careers.

Re: Interesting Read in Spokane Paper Before Walden was Hired

The other interesting part.... Walden saying...

The Cyclones do offer "A beautiful stadium, a new locker room and all that jazz."

Also implied ISU is a good job because of the money, stadium, and the fan support... 43,000 season tickets sold 2 years before and 36,000 season tickets sold season before he was hired.

So... I can see the fan support, but was our facilities really that great compared to so many others in 1986 or so? And ISU and money being in the same sentence?

Really wierd to read all of that.

That is unbelievable the way he spoke of the job before he was even offered or had it. If I were a WSU fan I'd have wanted him gone after reading it.

The way he talked about it, if I were them, I'd be assuming that he was gone.

At the same time, when you get a guy that actually answers questions honestly, do you really want to penalize him for that?

When you go to page D2 to read the rest of the article, look just to the left and read about the young up and coming Idaho Vandals coach by the name of Tim Floyd ("Vandals Find Players").

The facilities, relatively speaking, were probably decent and competitive in 1986. Trice and Hilton were fairly new. However, that was the year Gordon Eaton took over as ISU president, and as I recall, he did not hold college athletics (or at least upkeep of the facilities) in particularly high regard. As such, ISU started to fall behind the rest of the Big 8. The athletic facilities and infrastructure that Walden saw were put in place under outgoing ISU president Robert Parks.

If we sold 43,000 season tickets before Walden was hired, how did we set an all-time record with 33,000 or so season tickets in 2007?

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

We could have had Walt Harris back in 1986. Just imagine what ISU football could have been in the 90's
