    Overnight Trip Ideas?

Looking for somewhere fun to take my wife and boys (2 year old and baby) within driving distance from the Des Moines area. Would stay over overnight. Any ideas?

The Great Wolf Lodge in KC is a blast. We've done that twice for short vacations, and had a great time. Lots to do, and everyone is usually tired enough that one night seems like enough.

I think the obvious choice is the Twin Cities! Tons to do with the kids here.

I was thinking about heading up there, but the Twins aren't in town this week. I'd like to save a trip there for the Twins... one last trip to the Dome!

Go see the Saints instead, then. It's cheaper and a lot more fun for the family.

    Re: Overnight Trip Ideas?

For an easy "getaway", my sister takes her kids to a local hotel with a waterpark. Orders in pizza and movies, kinda like indoor camping. Not much for the adults, but the kids love it (and really don't know the difference).

She lives in Dubuque and Grand Harbor has one of those parks. Next door is the river museum which I think is pretty cool and the kids like. A little bit of shopping for the wife. Galena is only about 25 minutes away for ALOT of shopping for the wife.

My wife and I enjoy a weekend in Amana once a summer. Not really much for the kids, however.

We actually stayed at Grand Harbor earlier this year. It does have a nice park and was fun. We also went bowling at the casino across the street. The only real downside was that we also ate at the high end restaurant in the casino, and I've never paid so much for food that sucked.

    Re: Overnight Trip Ideas?

We just spent the weekend over by Williamsburg. We stayed at a hotel that has a water park inside it. I think it is Called Wasserbahn Water Park. We have a 4 year old and a 1 year old and it was perfect for them. They had 1 little pool with a slide that was about 1 foot deep, another pool that was maybe 4 foot deep with a basketball hoop, another pool that was like a funnel it made you float around in a circle, and then 2 big slides that started inside went outside and then finished inside again. My 4 year old loved it and wants to go back.
Im not sure how long in advance my wife booked it, but it wasn't that busy.
We stopped at Williamsburg and bought them school clothes pretty cheap at the outlet mall.

Does anyone know if the Grand Harbor water park has any "kiddie" pools? We have a two-year old, so trying to decide whether its worth taking him there yet.

Kinda - there really aren't many "pools". I guess there's one right where you come in, but definitely of the kid variety.

If you've been to Adventurland and that coconut-cove thing, it's pretty much exactly that. I believe they have a tube ride, kind of a lazy river thing. A slide, a hot tub. Then alot of water fountain like things with spraying water, water falls, that big bucket thing that pours 500 gallons down about every 10 minutes. It's like about any of the metro water parks you might go to. Just more or jungle-gym idea to go with it.

It's made for kids, and younger ones - but a two year old you'll definitely have to keep tabs on. I didn't try - but it looked to be pretty adult-accessible as well. My nieces were 7 and 9 and we were able to just let them run wild.

There is a good outdoor water park in Waterloo.

You can get a nice room at a good price right next door at the Isle.

We stayed at Wasserbahn in Amanas a few weeks ago for a night away with the kids (Also from Des Moines Area). We have a 4 year old and a 18 month old and they enjoyed it. They have a kiddie splash area.

They also have a deal right now where you can either get a $30 Tanger Outlet Gift card or $25 Casey's Gift Card with a nights stay.

We also just took our kids to Chicago for vacation and got some really nice hotels on Priceline.com for $40-$50 and they are young enough where they enjoyed a simple hotel pool just as much as a waterpark.
