From the article, it seems like Romie is doing well, despite having Alzheimers. That's good to hear and I like her attitude.

    Great article by Courtney.

I have great memories of the tonight show theme and Johnny strolling along the side line. The crowd absolutely love the man.

    Re: Tribune Article on Johnny

Back in the day - when Johnny was hired - of course there was no internet, or Cyclone message board. None of the major newscasts broke the story, I don't remember getting any buzz from insiders - it was a well kept secret.

I'll never forget the shock and surprise as I read the headline of the Des Moine Rag Sports stating "Iowa State Hires Johnny Orr".....This was a coach who was only four years removed from taking his team to the Final 4, Big 10 titles and had All-Americans on practically every one of his rosters.

It was a proud day for ISU and kudos to AD Lou McCullough for pulling out one of the biggest hiring coups in history.

We should apply the lessons from the thread below to Johnny. Enjoy and appreciate every moment you get with the man.

How about "Becauae we should do a lot better than just paint a friggin' name on a floor for him"? What are we, cheapskates? The man deserves a statue.

Oddly enough he was in the Tar Heal parade in a small town called Union on Sat. I'm not sure of the connection, but he made some Iowa State fan very happy by being able to escort him.
Quite a surprise when he went by.

Name US Hwy 30 between I-35 and Dakota Avenue as 'The Johnny Orrway' or 'The Johnny Orr Expressway' similar to Mark McGwire Highway in St. Louis and the George Brett Superhighway in Kansas City.

Great article. It's always nice to hear some more about Johnny. We were certainly blessed to have him as our coach for those years. I was pretty young when Johnny was our coach (I think I was 13 when he retired), but I remember going to games and never even HEARING the Here's Johnny play. We would all just stand up and cheer, but it was so loud that I didn't know that was what the band was playing.

And I'm glad to hear that Romie seems to be doing pretty good. It's impressive that they have managed to keep her at home for the past 10 years. That's a testement to a strong marriage and strong family support.

And, finally, we are very lucky to have Courtney at the Tribune. She provides a ton of coverage and a lot of really good features.

I know many 'local' Ames residents who are very critical of Courtney Linehan and hopes she gets the axe at the tribune. Granted, it is the Ames Tribune, and not a major publication, but some people are very critical of mistakes made in her articles.

What mistakes? The articles I've seen (albeit solely those posted here) have been informative and well written.
