    high school baseball

for any of you guys that follow it. It was the first time since 2002 in Class 4A that a Polk County team didn't win a state title. It was the first time in 15 years that there was no CIML team in the championship game. What are your guys' thoughts?

I guess Norwalk is representing the metro this year from 3A... although they beat my former high school to do it.

Talked to one of the scouts at the games yesterday. He said High School baseball as a whole is way down, especially in the Metro area, too many other distractions...

    Such as?

Is it because baseball is a summer sport?

Beckman had another good run this year. Seems like they make it to state a lot. Maybe these smaller schools have more emphasis on baseball.

Mainly... Football and Basketball have alot more going on in the summers now too...

I drove by 6 different little league ball field clusters yesterday, a gorgeous day, and they were already overgrown and nobody on them... I realize it's in the swing of all star season but there is no reason they cant have late summer early fall leagues...

    Re: high school baseball

The nature of high school students now is that they begin specializing in certain sports or activities earlier and earlier. Parents are convinced the only way their kids will play at the varsity level is if they focus them in on a single sport. Students used to be able to play 3 sports, sing in choir, be in a play, and still be a good student.

The truth is that they could still do this, but parents have become convinced that their kids have to specialize. It's too bad and I think baseball has taken a bigger hit due to this than football or basketball (partially because parents see their kids getting scholarships in football and basketball, but not baseball).

yeah, Valley's baseball program is starting to take a nosedive. Especially when their team was pretty much all seniors and they still were only a game or two above .500.

    Re: high school baseball

Amen IowaJazz!!! Kids should never, ever not have the chance to try all sports, all music, scouting, etc.!! This specializing when they are 4 years old is insanity, we are becoming "Little China".

Football and basketball are also full scholarship sports...
