    Painting field turf

We're renovating a bus for tailgaiting this fall. We managed to get some leftover field turf from a local high school and plan on using it for the flooring in our bus. We would like to paint a football field on the turf. Anyone have any ideas what kind of paint to use? Do you think we can use regular spray paint? I found some field marking paint online, but can't find anyplace that will sell anything less than a case of cans and we don't need that much. The "nap" on the turf is about 2", so I'm not sure spraying is even the best way to go. I'm worried if we use regular spray paint it will just flake off once it dries.

I wonder if street paint (stuff they use for parking lots and roads) would stand up better?

Or if there's some sort of dye you could get?

You're probably right and standard stuff will just flake.

    Re: Painting field turf

It's going to be tough to find something that's not made specifically for the surface to stand up to the foot traffic. If you ever really look close at a field anyways, it's never perfectly covered. It's the distance to the stands that fools the eye into believing it's a solid color or line. So my guess is even the "right" paint isn't going to look "perfect" to people standing directly on it.

If you decide to go the Home Depot route, look for a latex paint. They have that little bit of rubber in them that helps them to bend and move without cracking. Stay away from any enamel. It tends to dry hard and brittle. I know they sell latex spray.

I would shoot an e-mail to Mike Andresen, he's the manager of facilities & grounds for athletics. Oversees the care of the JTS grass and all practice fields. Could probably tell you what was used to paint the turf in the indoor.

    Re: Painting field turf

I'm thinking there is a specific kind of paint that is used for this purpose. I remember a while back seeing a local high school install a field turf field and if I remember right, the graphics and lines were all painted on after the fact. As I don't recall ever seeing someone out repainting a field turf field, I'm guessing the stuff holds up pretty well.

    Re: Painting field turf

I've been in the indoor a few times, and know that the hash marks get repainted every once in a while. the main sidelines, 5 yard lines, and endzones don't appear to get repainted though. About two years ago I was in there for an indoor soccer tourney and the hash marks were pretty faded, two weeks later we were playing there again and they look brand new.

And I hope for your sake that you won't be dealing with those little black rubber pieces all over the place.

In most installations of the newer artificial surfaces, there's no "painting" at all. The "blades" are dyed, then glued or stapled in place.

Check out this photo from Kansas:

The company that installed the metrodome and Nebraskas field turf is based in Denison Iowa. Maybe research and find their number and ask.

Sidelines and every 5 yards are permananently sewn in.
Hash and usually logos are painted on but can be sewn in permanent as well.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

When FieldTurf did our field, everything was sewn in.
