Re: Girl with Two Heads Born in Philipines

If it has two brains, wouldn't this technically be two girls who share a body?

I personally couldn't answer this question, but if it comes down to surgery where it is certain that one of the 2 will die in the surgery or let them remain as is and die an early death together, what do you decide?

Re: Girl with Two Heads Born in Philipines

The condition is called dicephaly monozygotic conjoined birth, and it occurs in only one out of 80,000 live births.
Is it just me, or does that sound like a really high ratio? There are about 340,500 births every day. That would mean this happens about four times a day around the world. If that's the case, why don't we hear about it more often and why is it news now?

    Pretty high still-birth rate:
    Conjoined Twins: eMedicine Pediatrics: Surgery

Twinning occurs in approximately 1 of every 87 live births. Monozygotic twins account for one third of twin births. Conjoined twins account for 1% of monozygotic twins. In the United States, the incidence is 1 per 33,000-165,000 births and 1 per 200,000 live births.10 The stillbirth rate is 40-60%. More cases are being reported now because of the routine use of fetal ultrasonography.

So is it one out of 80,000 live conjoined twin births? That would make more sense.

"Salvador Arciaga, the twins’ father, earns a meager income as a tricycle driver. He appealed to the public for financial assistance."

Hmmm, I wonder if there's much call for that? I used to drive a mean tricycle.

Well in the U.S. it'd be close to 20 per year, if you figure 1 per 200,000 and 4 million births. I think in this case it's more of a rarity to see such a level of conjoining. There's the Minnesota twins in their late teens around these parts I guess.

That would be murder. Since each head has a brain, it's actually two people.
