Looks like Ricciardi may have asked for more than teams were willing to give up for Halladay.

Ex-Cub Ronny Cedeno also got sent to the Pirates today.

Yeah the Red Sox apparently had a package together that included Clay Buchholz that was rejected. Looks like Halladay is staying put.

This is good news for Twins fans. The Twins have more games left against the Indians than the Tigers and Sox do. The Tigers and Sox have cleaned up against the Indians thus far, and now the Twins will have their chance down the stretch run. It would be even better if the Indians unload V Martinez to the Red Sox as has been rumored.

Trade deadline is one of the best times of the year.

I'd be mildly surprised if the Blue Jays don't blink and trade Halladay for a little less than what they were hoping for at the beginning. They aren't going to compete in 2010, his value is going to go way down if they wait until the offseason or next year's deadline, and they could be saving a ton of money. They already are paying awful contracts to Rios and Wells.

How many starters have the Pirates traded away? It has to be some sort of record...

I guess that's why they haven't had a winning season in nearly 2 decades.

They should be contracted. All they are is a glorified AAA team. I HATE teams like that. KC used to be the exact same way.

Pirates have traded a lot of talent away. Xavier Nady and Jason Bay last year, McLouth this year. If you look at the roster they had opening day 2008, they would probably be in the hunt for the division this year.

What is sad is that the Pirates have traded away 4 good outfielders. Nady, Bay, McClouth and Morgan. Its impressive that a team could trade so many players away with out trying to keep any of them.

The Pirates have traded alot of starters but they won't really miss any of them. They started because they were vets and made alot of money but not because they were necessarily better. They have/had ready replacements everywhere but SS and got Cedeno in that deal. Still only 10 games back and getting better, younger, and deeper. They'll be back.

The Pirates now have one of the best young pitching staffs in the NL. They wouldn't have those guys without those trades.

I'm not really sure what the Pirates long term goal is. I think there is at least one pirate fan on here so maybe he could enlighten us. I understand trading away big name players that they probably couldn't resign (i.e., Bay) to repopulate their farm system, but Nyjer Morgan and McClouth (who they had just signed in spring training through 2011) were costing them next to nothing in baseball terms ($411,500 and 2.5 mill/year, respectively)...They have traded 2/3 of their starting outfield by August 1st for the last 2 years; that's never a good thing.
