    Lets talk more football...

Since the vaccination thread is gtting out of control, lets talk some football! How many 5 wide sets are we going to see this fall? Can our defense compete un the Big 12 under Wally and a new scheme? Can the big uglies up front move? Can we start 5-0?
Thanks d4nim4l for your 100 video thread.......probably the best thread on CF ever.

    Re: Lets talk more football...

The most critical thing from last year was our inability to adjust to what the offenses were doing to us.

Even when we had little talent during the Skladany years, he was able to adjust to give us a fighting chance.

That has been a problem on both sides of the ball for many years. The offense has had its struggles of adjusting also. This is the first time in a long time where we have had 2 quality assistants running the offense and defense.

I think Tom Keifer and his band wrote a song about that once...

Don't know what you got till it's gone
Don't know what it is I did so wrong
Now I know what I got
    It's just this song
And it ain't easy to get back
    Takes so long

On a serious note, I see the D being greatly improved over last year. I'm hoping they reach an status of "Avg". At a minimum, I think they will exceed expectations.

Conversely, I think the offense will still struggle in the red zone and that will continue to be a source of frustration.

    Re: Lets talk more football...

The biggest storylines for this year:

    -Can PR coach?
-Can the D stop anyone/Is Burnham going to make this group better?
-How quickly can the offense pick up on the spread & can it be effective?
-Does this team have the mental toughness to win close games, buckle down in the red zone & fight off adversity?

I think PR is going to bring a greater intensity and hands on approach, but until the ball is kicked, we have no way of knowing what type of strategist or game manager he is.

The D should be better, Lord knows it can't really get any worse. The front 7 is still one of the worst among the BCS conference schools. We're more than likely going to give up a lot of points again, and if we don't, let's remember Mizzou, K-St. & Nebraska all lost some extremely talented offensive players, so it might not be that our D is better, it could be that the rest of the offenses aren't as good. Either way, the stats should improve.

Offense could be tricky. If these guys, Arnaud especially don't pick up on the spread right away, there could be problems. The spread isn't a guaranteed 450yds/game machine. Look at Auburn last year. They scrapped the spread half way through the season and had a terrible year offensively. If these guys don't pick it up, we could be trouble because it's not like we have a D to lean on.

All that being said, I think Arnaud will transition comfortably into the spread and our wideouts and RBs should be able to as well. The OL has experience the spread allows them to maximize their potential through blocking schemes.

If we can get a couple bounces our way, we could have a fantastic start to the year and have a shot at a bowl game. Any hiccups, especially outside of Iowa, and we could be looking at 3-9 again.

    Re: Lets talk more football...

We'll certainly see 5 wide sets but not sure how many/how often. It will all depend how our linemen fare in practice and early in the season going one on one with defenders.

From what I have seen in the various Rice videos posted around here blitzing is ineffective against this offense if the QB makes a quick read and release.

Rice's QB was pretty good at knowing where his receivers were and where the spots would be open from a blitz. I am not 100% sold on Arnaud doing this yet because it's his first year with this playbook and he made some boneheaded throws last year. With more experience he will get there though.

Don't be surprised to see more big sets for some games than 5 wide sets if Herman thinks running the ball will win the game.

    Re: Lets talk more football...

Also, I have absolutely nothing to base this on but I could see us starting vs NDSU with a very run heavy offense if it allowed

The first few drives could be running in to the teeth of their defense and if it works then it'll keep up.

Save the fancy stuff for dem Iowa boys.

This is the best reason I've heard but I think it's prefectly reasonable to expect a win at Kent. As for Arrowhead, it's hardy a hostile environment and will be truly neutral.

I think the home team continues to hold serve in the Cy-Hawk this year.

I expect to go 5-0 but I recognize that there is a strong possibility we could go 0-fer after that. It will be nice to have Baylor right after OU has beaten the **** out of them but I'm not going to hold my breath after the KSU game.

    Re: Lets talk more football...

Listened to coach Herman talk over the weekend at the Shrine clinic and he was impressive. Very intense like coach Rhoades. Offensively I think we will see a variety of sets and will go with what works. I'm sure we will see our share of 4 and 5 wide sets, but also see some sets with some TE's where we will be running a good share of the time.

The biggest improvement from last year is that we actually have a coach who wants to be here, and not take the first train out of town. Sure there is going to be alot adjustments to the new system. Come the start of the season I'll be bleeding the cardinal and gold. Just be a little patient, good things are on the horizon.

Can CPR be a good head coach? Thats is an unknown, but he has sorrounded himself with worhty assistants.
I cought the end of the interview the other day and he was saying that he is going to stay away from the offense and defense but be very active with the special teams? Or was I dreaming that.
