Former Longhorn not afraid to grab the bull by the horns

    DMR link

"We asked them to do their homework - to evaluate whatever university they're going to, and to evaluate what we have to offer," Chizik said of the non-binding oral commitments. "If there's no interest, we back off and go our separate ways."
"It didn't matter how many stars they had by their name, it didn't matter all the accolades they got," Chizik said. "We recruited the right guys for our program. Now it's our job to develop them and make them fit exactly what we need in our program."
"The workouts so far are different than what we've done in the past," Blythe said. "They're tough. Those 5:30 in the morning team runs aren't just running around the field a couple times."

"We're getting after it for 100 yards sprinting and bear-crawling. They're getting us in great shape. It's adding another level of stress to us - to see who can handle it and to see who can't."

    But 5:30 in the morning?

"It's still dark out at 5:30 in the morning," Blythe said. "I didn't know if my alarm clock went off that early, but I found out that it did."

I think Blythe has a great sense of humor. He has some great quotes.

It's still dark out at 5:30 in the morning," Blythe said. "I didn't know if my alarm clock went off that early, but I found out that it did."

That's a good read. Sounds like Chizik and staff have really put their noses to the grindstone. I love seeing that kind of work ethic - it reminds me of McDermott.

Re: Former Longhorn not afraid to grab the bull by the horns

Can someone explain why the title of the Register article is "Chizik persuades 25 recruits to ISU" but I only count 24 names on cyclones.com? Who is the phantom #25?

After a bit of digging, the athletic department's pdf lists:
"Patrick Neal 6-0 225 Fr. DL West Des Moines, Iowa (Valley)"

Neal didn't make the list here or here

He must have been late with his faxed LOI.

Neal was actually an '06 recruit but they must have grey shirted him or something.

I was a bit put off by the "Chizik persuades 25 recruits to ISU" headline just because of how it was worded. Always that little jab at ISU from the DMR. There were much more important things about this class (size, JUCO's, OL, Texas kids) that could've made the headlines.

But no, make it sound like Chizik had to beg people to come here.

Patrick Neal was a recruit from last year. I know that for a fact because I went to Valley.

I dont know for sure but he may have been a grey shirt so I guess he would count to the 2007 recruits.

Grayshirts are guys who come to campus, work out, but are not on scholarship and then get them the next year when they are college sophomores. It's pretty much a way to get a guy on campus for 6 years. At least that's my understanding anyway, that it's a way to get a tweener guy to put on enough weight to be effective.

Yeah, I was kind of irritated by the headline too. After reading the article, it seemed to fit more, as he persuaded some recruits away from their oral commitments elsewhere, but on the surface it looks like "Chizik tricks players into signing with Iowa State".

That article scares me....I find myself getting excited and as a Clone fan I should know better

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

Of course the headline for U of I would read something like "25 honored and fortunate to be selected to play for Hawks"

I'm afraid it may turn out like MBB this year. If we get a couple of wins here a close game there everyone gets wayyy too excited. Hopefully we'll all be able to enjoy the wins and keep in mind the goal that we have in the coming years, not just next year.
