    Timberwolves make yet another trade

The Thunder is on the verge of beefing up its frontcourt.

Oklahoma City is close to acquiring reserve center Etan Thomas from Minnesota, The Oklahoman has learned. In exchange for the 6-foot-10 Tulsa native, the Thunder has agreed to send the Timberwolves reserve guards Damien Wilkins and Chucky Atkins.

Under the proposed deal, the Thunder also would get Minnesota’s second-round pick in 2010 and perhaps one more second-rounder as additional compensation. The Thunder would have five total draft picks in 2010, including its own first- and second-round picks and Phoenix’s unprotected first-round selections.

Why Timberwolves? Why trade draft picks Thomas i understand but why trade draft picks?

Re: Timberwolves make yet another trade

Rotoworld has it a little different they have
The Thunder have reportedly agreed to trade for Timberwolves center Etan Thomas. They will send Damien Wilkins, Chucky Atkins, and a 2010 second-round pick to Minnesota.

The Thunder might also give up another second-round pick in 2010 (they have five total picks) in order to bolster their frontcourt while shedding two superfluous contracts. None of the players involved should have significant fantasy value next season.

So it will be interesting to see who goes where especially the draft picks

Re: Timberwolves make yet another trade

According to Espn the Wolves are giving up 4 2nd rd picks in this deal
OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Minnesota Timberwolves picked up point guard Chucky Atkins from Oklahoma City on Monday in exchange for veteran center Etan Thomas and four second-round draft picks next year.
Minnesota also got Oklahoma City guard Damien Wilkins in the deal. Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn, who has been busy reshaping the roster he inherited from Kevin McHale, said the swap gives the team flexibility when it comes to the roster.
This trade brought over Minnesota's second-round pick and whichever of the Timberwolves' other three second-round picks ends up last.
Wilkins, meanwhile, will be making a belated move to Minnesota nearly four years after nearly joining the Timberwolves. Wilkins signed an offer sheet with the Timberwolves in 2005, but the SuperSonics -- who later moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder -- matched the offer for the restricted free agent and kept him.
The way Kahn is wheeling and dealing this summer, there's no telling how long Wilkins will be on the roster. Like Thomas, Wilkins and Atkins have expiring contracts.

We may have some other moves to make and it’s still too early to tell,” Kahn said. “I thought this move provided some additional flexibility and thought we should go after it now.”

Re: Timberwolves make yet another trade

Jerry Z quoted Kahn as saying that they hope to have a deal that includes Atkins' contract within the next few days. Seems like a good time to fire up the ol' trade machine and see what deals could be made involving Atkins. He either has to be dealt on his own or the trade can't be finalized until late September. At this point, I can't think of any deals that would involve just Atkins but be fairly beneficial for the Wolves. What say you? What kind of savings could the Wolves conceivably realize?

I'd take it as a sign they don't expect Rubio to play this year if they end up with Atkins at the end of the day. It would make sense to have a veteran back-up for Flynn then.

Re: Timberwolves make yet another trade

An interesting thread posted by scooter13 at Rubechat about the season ticket-holder lunch held yesterday. A couple of highlights:
    - Richardson's chances of wearing a Wolves jersey: 50/50
    - Atkins's chances of the same: 99/1 (99 being 'no')
    - Cardinal will stay for leadership
    - Expect another trade in the next few weeks
    - Carney's up in the air
    - Pekovic will likely be here after 2010
    - Traded #18 because next year's draft is better
    - Identified lack of an 'explosive scorer' as a remaining need
    - Continues to maintain he'll be fine with Rubio staying abroad for 2 years
    - Brewer and Gomes have to 'really show [Kahn] something' this year as he couldn't get a feel for their roles.

After completing a buyout with the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday, guard Sasha Pavlovic has agreed in principle on a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolvesleague sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Pavlovic’s role with the Cavaliers diminished last season. The Timberwolves’ new coach, Kurt Rambis, was a big proponent of signing Pavlovic, a source said.

Sounds like the Cyclones luck. It is still about the wins.

"Newly acquired Antonio Daniels won't play for the Timberwolves after all.
As they also did this week with veteran center Mark Blount, the Wolves have given Daniels permission to find a trade that will allow him to play more elsewhere. If the Wolves can't trade Daniels, 34, for a contract similar to his $6.6 million deal, the two sides already have agreed to a contract buyout.
Daniels is hopeful of signing one more sizable contract and didn't think he would play enough behind young point guards Jonny Flynn and Ramon Sessions to do so. Wolves boss David Kahn obtained Daniels from New Orleans for Bobby Brown and Darius Songaila in a Sept. 9 trade that was all about ridding the team of the remaining two seasons on Songaila's contact.
