I believe it is going to actually hit 90 today

Right now it is 88 degrees in Indianola at 1:15. 24 days into July, the statistical hottest month of the year, and we finally hit 90. Can you believe it? This will probably go down as the coolest July in a long time. It has been nice not having to run the air conditioner all of this month.

Re: I believe it is going to actually hit 90 today

Definitely have had a cool year around this area.

The warmth and moisture today are two ingredients that will help prime the atmosphere for some pretty strong storms later, hence the severe thunderstorm watch already out for the northeast half of Iowa and extreme southeast Minnesota.

*EDIT - Also just noticed a new tornado watch in eastern Iowa. There's a real nasty storm in northeast Iowa headin' south.

Computer says it's 90 in Urbandale right now at 1:30.

Just stepped outside and it's still pretty nice. Not all that humid.

So, what are your thoughts about why it's so much colder outside this year and how it explicitly relates to how the polar ice caps are melting...

70s are not normal for this time of year plus this is just for a day, back to low 80s starting tomorrow.

We got quarter-sized hail this morning out of that Minnesota storm cell.

We didn't hit 100 degrees yestarday. The average temperature (not the high temp) for July here has been 89.6 degrees, the hottest July on record. I'll trade you.

Let me help a little with this question.

This years attempt at mimicking 2004 (aka the summer that wasnt) is because of...

We are stuck in a 'blocky' Northern Hemisphere weather pattern since at least last December. A High pressure area at/near Greenland has pretty much stopped the West to East flow of weather. Instead we have been stuck between a warm high in the west and a Cool trough in the east. This leaves us under a mostly NW flow. This means cooler than normal

This has produced not normal weather all over the Northern Hemisphere. The deep deep South (New Orleans) had snow this past winter. England had several atypical snowstorms. Texas is in a big drought. The NE U.S has rain about every day.

No kidding. It was very, very miserable for several weeks. Now we are happy when it only gets to 98!

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. ~ George Carlin

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers
