    Cards still interested in Holliday

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle hears that the Cardinals might be readying themselves to part with prospect Brett Wallace for Matt Holliday. The Cardinals need a bat to protect Albert Pujols and Holliday has a .310/.416/.492 line since May 5th despite a well-documented drop in power. He's walked 41 times in that span and continues to play above average defense in left field.
Holliday makes $13.5MM this year and will likely be a Type A free agent after the season. Wallace is a top prospect, playing in the upper minors with an OPS over .800 in his first full season of pro ball. Washington outfielder Josh Willingham is an option for the Cards in case Holliday costs too much money and too many prospects.

Matt Holliday makes a lot more sense than Roy Halliday at this point...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Do not deal with Billy Beane. Keep Wallace if you can and go after Willingham. Matt Holliday makes more coin that Pujols and the Cards can't afford them both, especially if they want to extend Pujols.

12:55pm: ESPN.com's Buster Olney says the Cards and A's are indeed discussing a possible Wallace for Holliday trade. One of Olney's sources says the odds of a deal are 50-50. The Cardinals ownership may be prepared to take on salary, or the A's may pay a portion of Holliday's contract to obtain a better return

Actually not quite... pujols makes 15 mil and holliday makes 13.5 but he will make more than pujols after free agency next season....

If they go after him they probly wont be able to resign him so we would be losing a top draft pick to sell out for this year.... i would rather trade wallace and somebody else for roy halliday because hes locked up for a couple years...

Thanks for correcting me, I knew under some scenario he made or would make more than Pujols in the near term.

I would greatly prefer a bat. Other than Todd Wellemeyer, the rotation of Carpenter, Waino, Lohse, and Piniero has been working pretty well. But we cannot continue to lose 2-1 and 3-2 games. Our offense since May 1 has a .245 BA, .310 OBP, and .396 slugging -- with Albert Pujols. Need more offense to stay in contention.

Depending on where your going to play DeRosa then you either need a 3b(Blaylock, Rolen) or you need an of Holiday or a starter Davis, Bedard or what about a ss?

Re: Cards still interested in Holliday

The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics have been talking about a possible swap of All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and top prospect Brett Wallace, according to sources, and one person familiar with the talks places the odds of a deal at 50-50.
If the Athletics kick money into a Holliday trade to offset his salary, then they would be in better position to ask for a quality prospect. Wallace, 22, is a former first-round pick who is hitting .292 in the minors this year, with a .372 on-base percentage.
Oakland is stacked with young pitching, but has a need for infielders. The Cardinals have known for many weeks that any trade for Holliday would have to include Wallace.

Re: Cards still interested in Holliday

The trade with oakland would be dumb because they cant sign Matt H. after next year anyway. They need to find a solid starter for the rest of the year which would not be roy H. because they wont be able to sign him after this year and gave up alot of talent for nothing. That being said I know they need a pitcher for this year but there focus should be locking up Pujols untill he retires............... Without him the redbirds are...(I dont wanna think about)

That's why we need a fifth starter, not another OF. And it looks like the OF might be forming up, if tonight was any indication. If they're going to trade Wallace (and I'd be happy to lose his lard), may as well be for a pitcher to replace Wellemeyer in the lineup.

Ken Rosenthal calls the Cards' interest "mild, for now." However, Jon Heyman has a few updates on the proceedings--as noted in the past, Cards manager Tony La Russa is said to "badly" want Holliday. Heyman also reports that the Cardinals might want the A's to pay a portion of the $1.8MM bonus Wallace received after the 2008 draft.

I will be interested in seeing what Holliday gets for contract offers. He hit very well in Colorado but not so well in Oakland so far.
