    Internet Providers

I need to purchase internet for my new home. I've decided to go with Dish Network (The bar will be calling for the ISU games) and they don't offer any bundled services. Who has the cheapest/best stand alone internet in the Ankeny Area? Thanks fellas!

    Netzero :D

Unless you mean broadband, then your options are basically Qwest or Mediacom.
    Generally speaking,
    Mediacom is the best.
    Qwest is the cheapest.

Generally speaking, you are wrong. Mediacom is the fastest (for now), Qwest is cheaper and more reliable.

Reliability will be different for everyone since it involves so many factors.

Basically it depends on if you want speed or if you want it cheap. I want speed so I'd choose Mediacom.

    Re: Internet Providers

Mediacom may be fast but I'm sick of how unreliable it is.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

    Re: Internet Providers

I've had both Qwest and mediacom. Both we're reliable for me. The mediacom connection was faster but it wasn't worth it to me to pay double for something that I only noticed when i was downloading something huge. I also hate mediacom so that made my choice easier.

I guess it depends. Mediacom advertises having faster lines. For 3 years I had an "8 meg" line from Mediacom and it usually performed at a quarter of that.

I've had a Qwest 5 meg line for 3 months now and it has outperformed Mediacom's service, and I've yet to have it go down.

And as far as speed is concerned in general, I can't imagine what you really need a big line for, unless you're really big into streaming movies/video. A 5 meg line can handle this fairly well. Unless you're hosting web services there really isn't any reason to need that much more bandwidth.

I think most everyone in Iowa is limited to 1.5 except a few select areas.

Mediacom will be the fastest until Qwest rolls out FIOS.

I've had 0 problems with Mediacom at my place (in DSM) in the last year. I had all sorts of issues with Qwest....

I've got 20 mbps service through mediacom and routinely get all of it (and then some). I've never had an issue with it going down.

If you want advice on what YOU should get, I would generally say go with Qwest if you're not a mediacom subscriber, as for most things it's plenty fast, and likely cheaper as well.

I, personally, have Mediacom because it's flat out the fastest internet service I, and most everyone else, can get in the metro at the moment.

Just curious, how is Qwest going to do their FIOS? Are they going to use the Verizon FIOS approach and run fiber to the home/premises, or are they using the AT&T U-verse approach and only run fiber to the neighborhood/node, with copper from the node to the house/premises?

I guess AT&T U-verse is running FTTH in newer neighborhoods, but unfortunately in mine, they are doing FTTN. If copper is involved, I might as well stick with cable for now...

What I heard is that it's going to be the AT&T U-verse hybrid approach, so it won't actually be to FTTH.

It'll still be zippier, but you're stuck with DSL technology still, which is going to reach a threshold at some point. It reached it in my neighborhood, so that's why I'm with Mediacom. All the upstream bandwidth in the world doesn't help if your last mile is crap.
