Oklahoma State WR maybe done at OSU?

    Gundy discusses discipline

Related story: OSU coach's contract is complete.

In 2005, during an eight-month period after he was promoted to the position of Oklahoma State's head football coach, Mike Gundy dismissed eight players for various violations of team rules.

Since 2005, he has dismissed nine more players for 17 total.

Gundy says he wants not only a successful program, but a clean one.

"When you're dealing with 125 guys between the ages of 18 and 23, you want everybody to do the right thing," Gundy said. "But sometimes, guys make mistakes."

This year, the Cowboy program has had problems.

In February, wide receiver Bo Bowling was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of paraphernalia and possession of controlled substances. Another wide receiver, Damian Davis, was expelled from the program because of an unspecified violation of team rules. Bowling is still included on the OSU roster, but is suspended and likely won't play for the Cowboys again. He had a chance to be a starter this year.

Davis definitely would have been a starter. He was considered the program's second-best receiver, behind Dez Bryant.

In June, sophomore tight end Jamal Mosley and freshman running back Dexter Pratt were charged with misdemeanor possession of

marijuana. Mosley is expected to start this year, while Pratt is a nationally renowned recruit from Navasota, Texas. OSU did not announce a suspension for Mosley or Pratt. Both players are participating in summer workouts.

Gundy said the Bowling, Davis, Mosley and Pratt situations are not indicative of a flaw in OSU's discipline policies.

"Some players have made some mistakes. If they become habitual offenders, then the discipline becomes much more severe," Gundy said. "There's a responsibility that goes with playing football here. Our players are expected to do the right thing. We discipline our players inside the program. When we identify a problem, we work on it.

"You have to be realistic. Occasionally, there are going to be issues. We handle them and make sure the players know that there are consequences for making mistakes. Ultimately, if problems (persist), we dismiss players from the team if we have to."

I have to say, as an OSU fan, that I love Coach Gundy's approach. There are too many College Football programs that tolerate bad behavior from players. These players should consider it a privilege to play for and get an education at a major University. Everyone deserves a second chance but, when players keep repeating the same mistakes they need to go. No matter how good of players they are.

Hard not to respect a man that's 40. All kidding aside, I do like Gundy. He's a polar opposite of Eddie and Scott Sutton so it's nice to see there football program clean things up.

Nice. He will never live that one down.

The Suttons, oh, their ethics make me shudder. The guy even got Kentucky in trouble. What kind of cheater is so blatant that Kentucky gets in trouble?

So he kicked two guys off the team and didn't even suspend the other two? One of which is still expected to start. Was there more to this story that was not reported or am I oversimplifying the situation?
