ISU Campus Master Plans from 1991 and 2000

I came across this link after looking for something else, however, found it quite interesting. The map below is a master plan from 2000 of what ISU leaders thought would be in the future. Some things I found interesting was that Helser, the Armory, Nuclear Engineering, and most of Richardson Ct were planned to be demolished. Also, it looks as though they had planned for University Blvd (Elwood Drive) to extend northward through Brookside Park to 13th Street.

I'm curious to see what other CF's think of this plan from the last decade, and what they think should be included in a future 'master plan' for ISU, including/and not including athletics.

You can't tell me they don't make a fortune off Freddy right now so they probably made a good move not getting rid of the 30s, 50s, and 70s.

Future: Move all sports into the Iowa State Center area. Get rid of the rest of Helser. Get rid of the rest of the Towers Complex (possibly rebuild a permanent structure there since Towers were constructed as a temporary fix to housing issues). The Armory needs some serious help. South Endzone at JTS. Hilton renovation. Numerous lecture halls could use some attention (McKay, Coover, Carver) to get them up to the likes of Lush Auditorium, Curtiss, LeBaron, etc.

What the hell did they want to get rid of the eastern portion of Hoover Hall for?

Lush is not the same level as Curtis or LeBaron. That room is old and needs to be re-done.

Lush isn't bad, it was just redone in 2004. It is actually my favorite. I don't like the two rows per level in LeBaron.

I think that Coover is going to happen eventually. Now that they've built the new addition, Phase II is supposed to renovate the rest, expand the SE corner for a bigger auditorium and enclose the atrium:

ISU Electrical and Computer Engineering: ECpE Building Addition and Coover Hall Renovations Project

Right now, I think that their biggest priorities are the Biorenewables Complex, Horticulture greenhouse, Phase 2 Coover and Phase 2 of the Vet Med renovations. Oh, and of course JTS South Endzone!! Check out a video of what the Biorenewables Complex will look like here:

What the hell do they use the Nuclear Engineering Building for anyway? I swear, in 4 years at ISU, I never saw 1 person walk in or out of that building.

What the hell else can they POSSIBLY need to do in that monstrosity? They quadrupled it in size last year (I'm only partially kidding...but that addition is HUGE!)

Engineering nuclear stuff I'm guessing. I've seen one person walk out of it before and I kinda wondered what goes on in there.

I can't wait to unveil my plans for the DJK College of Design after I win the lottery and buy it.

They used to have a nuclear reactor there, but it was decommissioned in the 90's I think. Now I think that building is mostly offices with a few research labs.

Yeah, I don't remember where I read it but it got decommissioned to the tune of 1.x million dollars. How can it be that expensive to quit using something?

So...I assume the reason they haven't demolished it yet is because there's an old reactor in there? Makes you wonder what else is in the basement of that place.

We keep a few nukes down there just in case the idiots to the east-southeast of Ames about 120 miles get any wise ideas.

Looks like renovation of the small animal hospital. So there wouldn't be much more expansion, just renovation. They supposedly needed to do this work to keep their accreditation. The facilities were really pretty bad before Phase I.

I'm not so sure it's used for much of anything anymore. I know the 6 years I went to ISU I never saw anyone walk in or out of that building either. That being said, I don't think ISU can just tear down the building or use it however they feel, either, as the federal government might have some say as to what happens to that building.

The ISU SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team uses the garage for all their work on their E-85 race car.

When the modifications to Coover started all the ECpE staff and the ISEAGE faculty had to move their offices out of Coover and into NucE, and they'll be there until the Phase II modifications to Coover are done.

Other than that, I don't know. One of the doors into that place has a big red sign on it that reads "If door is locked, fallout has occurred". Always made me warm and fuzzy on the inside, wait, maybe it's a tumor....
