    Was James Franklin a Candidate?

Maryland's Friedgen says he might stay on - baltimoresun.com

I'm not sure if we were looking at him for HC or OC, but I just ran across this, found it interesting.

...and I may be way off base, but John Cooper may be the connection to Maryland. I remember reading an article where he helped get a kid connected with Maryland (after his tOSU days), but don't remember the specifics...

Former ISU football player (team MVP), assistant coach, and also head coach at Ohio State before Tressel. Reportedly ISU went with Donnie Duncan over Cooper after Earl Bruce left, and hence ISU football's demise until DMac.

Also i believe compiled a whopping 2 wins against the team from Ann Arbor, thus leading to his demise in Buckeye Country...

Pollard worked at Maryland from '94 to '98, so I'd assume Pollard still knows some people there. Geoffrey also worked there. I'd guess those would be your connections (mainly Pollard).

Yeah, I would have been really upset if he would have gone 111-43-4 with 12 bowls (10 in consecutive seasons), but only won twice versus nebraska during his time here...

Re: Was James Franklin a Candidate?

When I hear about choosing Donnie Duncan over John Cooper, combined with the rest of our downtrodden history, makes me think the athletic department should start using the slogan "Iowa State: What If?"

OSU fans hate this guy with a passion. Seems he had a knack for blowing it in big games.

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm not sure how else to say it...ISU is not OSU.

You must do 2 things well at OSU. Beat Michigan and win big Bowl games.

There are a lot of teams that would love Cooper's results...too bad for him OSU isn't one of them. Then again, if you get the benifits of coaching at OSU (multiple 4-5 star players) you have to take the downside with it.

If you makes you feel any better, ISU came this close to hiring Mike Krysweski when he left West Point.

You could say the same thing for their current heach coach, but I guess that depends on what your definintion of a big game is.
