    Time to buy a diesel

Survey Says: Buy a Diesel (or Hybrid) And $ave | Autopia | Wired.com

What exactly is "clean diesel"? Can you get it at any gas station that sells diesel? Or is all diesel "clean" now?

Re: Time to buy a diesel

I think "clean diesel" in that article refers to the stricter 2010 EPA emissions guidelines for diesel vehicles. All diesel sold at the pump has been ultra-low sulphur content for quite some time now.

Still eagerly awaiting the arrival of this one to compliment my Jetta TDI...

I drove a Jetta TDI a few months ago when I was looking for a new vehicle. If I was in the market for a midsize sedan, I think it would be near the top of my list.

My uncle drove a Diesel Jetta for a long time - he really loved it. Nice car to ride around in too... especially with heated leather seats

Re: Time to buy a diesel

We had a Jeep Liberty CRD that the hub and I Loved. It got great mileage, ran well and was nice to have in the winters. Unfortunately, we had to trade it off for a larger vehicle when we had kid #2. If they ever make a large SUV/Crossover with a diesel engine, I think the hub will be first in line for one...

I'd like to see a diesel hybrid mixture. Seems like it would be the best of both worlds. The Diesel engines are known for excellent gas mileage on the highway which is where the gas hybrids suck.

I agree, especially if they get storage capacity to a point where the diesel could run at one speed to keep the battery charged, while the battery handles all of the propulsion. Having that diesel engine tuned to run at one constant speed would be extremely efficient. Unfortunately the IC engines are still required to pitch in on the "go" side to keep the vehicle sufficiently peppy.

Re: Time to buy a diesel

Just bought a 2003 GMC 2500hd Crew Cab w/6.6l Duramax. 1st trip out I got 22mpg running 75 on the interstate. We have a 2002 Yukon Denali 6.0l w/125k and it gets 16.5mpg. The only problem is gas is ~$2.13/gal and Diesel is @ $2.50/gal. Still at 22mpg I get about 8.5 gallons savings per tank vs. the Yukon. I went diesel to pull and for the mpg.

You can have it Fast, Cheap, Reliable.....Please pick TWO!

What are you gonna do??? None of the US automakers have the fortitude to make a diesel pickup smaller than a 3/4 ton. If they won't, I'll buy from one that will...

Re: Time to buy a diesel

I was nearly sold on the diesel VW. If was going to go the "economy" route, I would have done it. But, I can't give up my performance. I work from home and driving is more of a hobby and something I actually enjoy. When I go for a drive, I do so to enjoy the driving experience more so than to get from point A to B (although there is always a destination). I really, really like the new VW diesel products.

I really think this truck could do well. Great mileage, great price, and very practical.
