If you're wondering why GM has failed...

Just saw this on a****log. It sounds like there were a lot of complaints on the cup holders in the Pontiac Solstice. So in 2009 you now get one that sits on the passenger side that will break in a matter of seconds and 2 BEHIND your head. In case anyone from GM ever reads this thread, it would be better to have no cup holders ( believe Porsche used to do this).

Why will the passenger one break in a couple of seconds? Does it self-destruct? And those just look like storage areas, are they actually cup holders? If so, that's stupid.

You have to understand the German driving culture to understand why Porsches don't come with cupholders. When a German drives, they are driving - they're not eating, they're not drinking, and more often than not they are not even listening to the radio. Their full focus is what is on the road.

What a novel idea. Sounds made up, though.

The cup holders in my G8 suck too. They are very small, and they're just a little too close together (not unlike Jerry Seinfeld's eyes). Clearly 20 oz. styrofoam cups are seldom placed side by side in Australia, and that's to say nothing of the apparent lack of anything in the "Big Gulp" range.

Behind each headrest sits a cupholder. No, that's not a typo – I said "behind each headrest." They're molded into these rectangular storage bins General Motors put back there. Obviously, someone at GM wanted to uphold the Solstice tradition of bizarrely-placed cupholders.

Only issue with this argument is that Porsche now puts cup holders in their cars. I think they should have left them out.

Is that just the ones they ship to America, or does that include the ones that stay in Germany as well? I know that European cars go through an "Americanization" process before they are shipped here - maybe the Germans figured out cupholders are a big seller to the American public and added it to the process.

So they were storage compartments and they made them into cupholders, that's really dumb.

Re: If you're wondering why GM has failed...

Keep in mind that I'm just messing around in saying this is what drove GM into bankruptcy. However, it does say something about the designers.

This is similar to when I got out of college and bought a brand new Firebird Formula. The first thing I did was take my black beast to the car wash. After drying it off I got back into the car and the Ttops were leaking water. I went to the dealer and all they said was that after you remove them one time they all do that. I knew at that point it would be a few years until I bought another domestic. It's been 20 years...but in a few years the corvette may be calling my name.

As a side note, I love the Honda S2000 but it's nearly impossible for anyone over 6 foot to fit in one. I put the seat all the way back and both of my knees still hit the dash. I was actually considering replacing the seat so I could buy the car.

The cup holders suck in thier new pickups also. There is a whole list of what GM has messed up the past few years in their cars and trucks.

True and you can't even lump all of GM products together. My father had a Chevy Silverado diesel that had over 300K miles and few problems.

What I found is not that the powertrains were unreliable but that the interiors were so cheaply made and this was the case for all of the Big 3. They would be fine at first but after a few thousand miles they look/sound terrible. Fortunately this has improved a lot in the last few years.
