    2009 Football Standings prediction

Summer has hit it's sports lull (for me at least) and I decided to focus away from celebrity deaths, ISU-Iowa smack and baseball (not that those aren't important discussion topics from time to time). I made an excel spread sheet and put all big 12 teams' schedules into and worked the formulas into standings. I simply went through game by game and this is how the standings came up. Feel free to add your own predictions in as well!

    Things to note:
    - The big 12 south will be very similar to last year except switch Tech with Okie St. Texas will beat OU, OU will be Okie State and Okie State will beat Texas in Stillwater.
-Mizzou will start off 0-1 after losing to Illinois
-Baylor will upset Nebraska in Waco.
-Texas A&M will go 4-0 non conference and then fall apart to win only one big 12 game against Iowa State. ISU unfortunately always seems to fall victim to those types of situations.
-I had ISU beating NDSU, Iowa, Army, KSU, CU and Baylor.

    Big 12 North

    Kansas 5-3 (9-3)
    Mizzou 4-4 (7-5)
    Nebraska 4-4 (7-5)
    ISU 3-5 (6-6)
    KSU 2-6 (5-7)
    Colorado 1-7 (3-9)

    Big 12 South

    Oklahoma 7-1 (11-1)
    Okie St. 7-1 (11-1)
    Texas 7-1 (11-1)
    TTech 5-3 (9-3)
    Baylor 2-6 (5-7)
    TAMU 1-7 (5-7)

Big 12 Championship game: Once again, OU's loss will come earlier resulting in a higher ranking later after more wins. They will beat KU in the title game and again lose in a January BCS bowl.

Looks good. Colorado at 3-9! I would love that to happen. I don't think it will, but the Hawkins pressers would be must-see-TV. Also, I think Tech falls back to earth, probably in the 7-8 win range. Also, Illinois is going to pound Mizzou in the opener.

I like it all, except I think Ok State will be taking the South.

I am cautiously optimistic we beat K-State and Colorado. I'm not sure we get 6 wins though. We should win atleast 3 non-conference games but the Kent State game scares me to death, especially being away. I'll predict 5 wins.

    Re: 2009 Football Standings prediction

    My outlook:

Kansas - Based on experince, best offensive unit in the North. They'll have some issues with their inexperienced LB'ers. KU should roll through their non-con undefeated (Northern Colorado, Duke @UTEP, Southern Miss) 9-3 regular season with conference losses to OU, TT, and Texas

Nebraska - Too much inexperience with QB and WR's prevent me from picking NU to win the North. Defense vastly improved last year, but this year, can they take the next step? 3-1 in the non-con, only loss to VA Tech. I see conference losses coming coming from Tech, OU, and right now Kansas. 8-4 regular season. All though, Nebraska had Tech on the ropes last year and the last time Tech was in Lincoln in 2005, Nebraska should've beat Tech as well. As I said in another thread, if Nebraska sweeps both Missouri and Tech, they will have some serious momentum on their side.

Colorado - They get a break from the non-con schedule (CSU, Toledo, Wyoming, and WV). CU returns a total of 17 starters from last year's team. It's now or never for Hawkins. 7-5 get's CU to a bowl game with conference losses coming from Texas, Kansas, Okie Lite, and Nebraska. They could even knock off WV @ WV, if that's the case, 8-4 would get Hawkins an extension, if he already doesn't have one.

Missouri - New everything. New coordinators, new skill players, everything. In the non-con, they could easily lose twice (Illinois and @ Nevada). I don't see Missouri losing to Nevada, but with such a young team playing on the road, you have to keep the upset potential in your mind. I see 4 conference losses coming their way (Nebraska, Okie Lite, and Texas back to back to back (ouch) as well as to Kansas. Baylor could even be a tussle for Missouri.

Iowa St. - 17 starters return, new coach and enthausism is everywhere. 3-1 in the non-con schedule, could even beat Iowa as the home team has won how many years in a row now? Should beat Kansas St and AtM, I don't see very many sure conference wins after.

Kansas St - complete mess, 16 starters do return though and with a favorable non-con, they should start 3-1, maybe AtM is their lone conference win.

    South:

Texas - 16 starters return and after the mess last post season with the Big 12 CCG, they are out for blood.

Oklahoma - 15 starters return. Major offensive line questions. Interesting non-con schedule with BYU (at Dallas), Idaho St., Tulsa, and at Miami, FL.

Oklahoma St - This year's Texas Tech. Open with Georgia at home. Beat Georgia and they should roll into Texas undefeated on Oct 31

Texas Tech - Do they ever rebuild? It's the system that makes this team so good. I see an 8-4 regular season with losses to Texas, Kansas, Okie St, and OU.

Baylor - 20 starters return, but the offensive line is the major question marke for this team and they get tested right out of the gate with Wake Forest and UCONN. Baylor does improve their win total from last year, but not enough to go bowling.

Texas A&M - To be honest, I don't know alot about this team. Mike Sherman just reminds me too much of Bill Callahan and what he did at Nebraska. A&M should go through the non-con 3-1, after that I just don't know.

Good breakdown of the Big 12 following spring ball from the OWH:

I agree they'll tie on record, but unforunately, I have OSU losing later than OU loses....and with the Big 12 tiebreaker rules, OU will get in to the big 12 championship game.

    Re: 2009 Football Standings prediction

I think OU beats Texas, plays Florida in a rematch of the 2008/09 Nat. Championship.

OU's Dline/LBs could form a good NFL group right now.

I think it comes down to UTs lack of solid production at RB. UT also looses NFL draftees Miller and Orakpo from a stellar 08 dline.

OUs only glaring weakness will be the Oline, matched up with a Texas line replacing Orakpo and Miller. I also think OU's amazing Dline will perform better than UT's excellent Oline.

I think colorado will at least win 5 games. Kansas State will probably be the worst team in the north this year.

I completely agree with this list except I'm going to predict that Texas wins the South. IMO Texas has the better quarterback.

    Re: 2009 Football Standings prediction

I didn't realize NU only has 12 starters returning, and MU only has 10.

I would probably switch KU & NU around and potentially dip MU below CU. I still think there is a talent gap between KU,NU, MU & CU, ISU, KSU though.

My only concern for picking KU tops, is they are replacing their entire interior Oline and still have a youngster at the key LT postion. More hits on Reesing could potentially bring inconsistency and stalled drives out of this previously consistent offense. Also, I'm still not sold on Jake Sharp's talent at RB.
