    Becker to plead insanity

Court Records: Becker To Use Insanity Defense - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines

Got this from the KCCI website which i thought was interesting. Go figure...a murder trial in which he pleads he's insane.

Hard to tell on this one. The fate of whatever happesn to him does not bring Ed back. The important thing is for the town to rally and focus on the positives.

Even if this were to work, hopefully they can get him on something meth related. And no, it doesn't bring Ed back... but this kid needs serious help, and needs to be far away from society for a while.

    Re: Becker to plead insanity

There's frankly not enough evidence publicly available to tell whether the murder was caused by / resulted from some sort of mental illness / diminished mental capacity. That's what the trial, and an impartial jury are for. However, if it does end up that Becker was suffering from a mental illness at the time, and that caused the murder, I really hope the Iowa mental health system can provide him the help he needs.

It was mental health and/or drugs. You don't just do what he did unless you have a serious problem. Either way, he needs help.

If by that you mean that you hoped he's locked away in a psych ward for the rest of his life, I'm in 100% agreement.

Really though, who didn't see this coming? I believe that this was brought up in the thread about him pleading not guilty.

We should be very proud of the strides we've made in dealing with mental illness in this country in the last century. We've come a VERY long way.

Again, this is all prefaced on a jury finding that he did in fact have diminished capacity at the time of the crime (if the mental illness defense is unsuccessful, count me in the "lock him up and throw away the key" category): But, if that's the case, he should undergo mandatory residential mental health treatment for as long as is required until he's no longer a threat to himself or others. If that's the rest of his life, so be it. If that's three years, we should let him out in three years. There's no sense punishing someone for an action that was caused by a mental illness, not his own malice.

I know you're right, and I know that Becker is due a fair trial just like everyone else is. That being said, he could have made this a lot easier on everyone involved if he had just pled guilty.

    It'll be a circus, that's for sure.

If they let him out within his lifetime, they had better be 100% sure that he is 100% cured.

Yeah. Hopefully it never happens, but if I were ever in his position, or one even remotely close to it, I would hope I had the guts to own up to it. Whether I intended to commit the crime or not, if I had physically committed the crime I would take the punishment.

    Re: Becker to plead insanity

I know some people how are mentally ill and the difference when they are off their medication vs on their meds is a night and day difference. If he was off his medication during the incident, there needs to be some sort of law the requires him to take them. (if he is somehow released in his lifetime)

Perhaps I'm a bit cold. But I have no "I hope he gets help" feelings. I just can't manufacture that even if I tried. Mentally insane or not, it's simply just no reason to walk into a room and gun down a perfectly good, innocent man.

Agreed. He took another man's life. No second chances on that one.
