Best towns to live. Top 100

    Looks like

    Urbandale is #42
    Ankeny #62
    Bettendorf #80

    Papillion, NE #3 WTF

I think these things are a crock. So you're telling me Grimes, Waukee, Johnston, Clive, etc are so different than Urbandale that they wouldn't be on the list?

    According to who?

Is there a correlation between subscriber numbers and "best town" rankings?

Bettendorf if you live close to Pleasant Valley or north of Middle Rd and east of 18th. But, being part of the Quad Cities, there are even parts of Bettendorf that you could not make me live in (and I'm not talking about the rich areas).

This list depend heavily on marketing. The cities that "market" themselves to the list make the list.

Best Places to Live 2009 - Top 100: City details: Louisville, CO - from MONEY Magazine

Plymouth doesn't appear to be on the list. So basically it went from #1 to not in the top #100. That makes sense.

They typically change the criteria for this list every other year. This year it is smaller cities, under 50,000. The 2008 list was larger cities, over 50k. So Plymouth should be back on the list next year.

I'm currently in Olathe, KS which was number 11 on the large cities list in 2008. I will agree that it is a great place to live, but I will also concede that coming up with a list like this is pretty difficult. There are so many factors that weigh into a person's decission on where to live that nobody is going to agree with these lists completely. Plus, I think you have to submit your city to be considered, so just because other places like Waukee or Johnston aren't on the list doesn't always mean they didn't make the cut, they may not have even been in the pool.

Not sure about this list, but they are usually compiled based on some formula that weights several factors like crime rate, health care, school rankings, number of performing arts centers and outdoor recreation areas, etc. Then when they get the list they tweek it and call the Chamber to get some information to put in the article. Kind of like the Rivals star rankings for recruiting.

    You forgot a couple:

    In Nebraska?
    Papillion - Yes (-1000000 pts)
    Johnston - No

    Rhymes with "Crapillion"?
    Papillion - Yes (-1000000 pts)
    Johnston - No

Re: Best towns to live. Top 100

Has Clive and Urbandale grown into Dallas County?

    19. Dallas County, IA

    Towns include: Urbandale, Clive
    Job growth (2000-2008): 51.4%

Don't be confused. Dallas County, Iowa, is some 700 miles north of the Big D in Texas. But it's just to the west of Des Moines, and gets a lot of spillover business from Iowa's largest city. Back in the day that might have meant work in a feed lot or factory floor, but now it's likely to be in insurance, finance or healthcare.

Wells Fargo is the county's largest employer, followed by Farm Bureau Insurance and a host of health-related companies. But the past is still alive in Dallas County -- Tyson Fresh Foods employs over 1,200 people at a port processing plant.

So I guess a lot has changed since 1986 when I left there!

When I moved to Clive in 1966 we didn't have mail delivery. We had to go to the post office. 86th street was 2 lanes and dirt north of Hickman!
