    Quiet Sun Revisited

SkyandTelescope.com - News from Sky & Telescope - Solar Sleuths Tackle the "Quiet Sun"

For the past couple of years, our Sun has been at the minimum of its 11-year activity cycle. Its face has been virtually spotless for months on end, and there've been no dire alerts of titanic solar storms about to slam into Earth.

The Sun appeared spotless on June 19, 2009 as it has virtually every day for the past year.

The problem is that this "quiet Sun" has continued far too long, and a special task force predicted that the transition from the just-ended Cycle 23 to the upcoming Cycle 24 would come around March 2008. It didn't.

Gallileo actually went blind looking at sunspots through a telescope back in his day.

That's debatable. Most now think that he went blind from a combination of cataracts and glaucoma.

Most accounts say that he only observed the sun at sunset, when it is safer to view through optical devices.

I read that he went blind from doing what his mother warned him about.

    Re: Quiet Sun Revisited

A quiet or active sun can have a lot of bearing on conditions here.

    Cool Re: Quiet Sun Revisited

In related news, after negotiating with the sun, the G8 Summit leaders announced they would not allow world temperatures to rise more than 2 degrees. Good thing the sun agreed.

Since this is, in a way, an astronomy thread, I want to put in a plug for Philip Plait. He's written some very entertaining books about astronomy issues, and runs a great blog. He's a fellow skeptic and champion for good science. Here's his blog:

I believe this correlates with colder than normal winters. Last winter was that way...
