    Re: Toyota Highlander

My neighbor has one that burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Don't know if you are looking at new or not but I would definitely look for oil or smoke when starting the vehicle and oil inside the exhaust. Seems to be a reoccurring issue with them if you poke around the internet. I believe the neighbors is an 03. They love the truck otherwise.

    Cool Re: Toyota Highlander

We have had our Highlander for a year now. Bought the 2008 sport model which is one step above the base model and one step below the top of the line model. We LOVE our Highlander. Best vehicle we have ever owned by far.

The only negative review I've read was that since it is built on a car platform (the Avalon), the steering is loose and not tight or sporty enough for some. I didn't find this an issue at all. Our Highlander drives like a car, rides so smooth, it is great. We really enjoy the 3rd row seat when we need it but most of the time we have it down and there is plenty of room to haul stuff.

In the recent past we've owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Mercury Mountaineer. When we bought the Highlander it felt like we were driving a Lexus. I just can't emphasis enough the night and day difference over how much we like the Highlander compared to what we've owned in the past. Just no comparison in our opinion.

FYI.....I didnt have the best experience with Toyota of DM and I'm probably never buy from them again. They goofed a lot of stuff up, paperwork, etc... I've heard great things about the Toyota dealership in Ames though.

    Re: Toyota Highlander

I like the Highlander, but it was more expensive than what I was looking for. Unless you're anti-GM right now, take a look at the 2010 Equinox. They did a lot of updates to it and its nothing like the old Equinox.

Highlander is sharp. We recently got a 06 Honda Pilot and its solid as well, in case you are looking at other options as well.

    Re: Toyota Highlander

GM doesn't have a lease program. If they did I'd lean toward a Chevy Traverse and the Equinox would be on the list if it's big enough.

I had a 4runner and loved it, so I'd compare the 2 as well.

    Re: Toyota Highlander

We love our Highlander Limited, it now has 112,000 miles (2002 model). Absolutely no quality issues what-so-ever. We are currently looking into replacing our Nissan with another Highlander or 4-Runner. Current Highlander will be our second car.

We like it so much our neighbor purchased one and love it.

We actually purchased it on ebay through a Lexus of Palm Beach dealership in Florida ($400 to transport it here). It had 11,000 miles on it when purchased in 2004. We have kept up the service records, with maintenance at Wilsons here in Ames.

If I had any issues it would be the wind tunnel effect with the back windows only down when driving at higher speeds - minor problem. And we bought a front wheel drive to have better mileage, but our next one may be 4 wheel.

    Good luck,
