    Google Chrome OS

    Google Chrome OS

I know people don't use the browser as much, but one thing Google does very well is introduce new products and add to them as time goes on. I believe add-ons will be coming to the browser similar to firefox soon. That said, thoughts on the OS?

    Re: Google Chrome OS

I think people are blowing it out of proportion when they say it's a "Microsoft killer". It sounds like it's going to be good for netbooks and possibly laptops with limited use. I expect it to be good, just like nearly everything else Google puts out.

I'm more excited about Google Voice and I wish they would send me an invite soon so I could test it out.

M$ is all about business desktops and servers. We are not switching to google anytime soon. If it was easy we would have all switched to Linux years ago.

    Re: Google Chrome OS

I like the OS concept...if any company has the logistical means to get into the arena in any serious capacity it's Google.

Microsoft's OS problems are largely that their OS is designed for people with technical brains coupled with the fact that they've been delivering a product that is wide open by default from a security perspective because it reduces call volumes.

It might be nice for some people, but when it says that the web will be a big part of using the system, I just know that it's not something that I can use anytime soon.

There are a lot of people (like me) who can't get decent high-speed internet. Until Qwest brings DSL to my area (which they've told me will not be in the next 2 years) I will just ignore products like this.

    Re: Google Chrome OS

Like other distros it serves a certain niche. I dont see it taking over the business market.

I think this type of application would suit googles new OS.

    CrunchPad: The Launch Prototype

Being under 300 dollars, could really sell the heck out of this thing.

The laptop to desktop market percentage is growing and will continue to do so, and now netbooks are gaining too. Google is probably looking at where we'll stand 10 years down the road and this OS will probably find its market niche quite well by then. It will be mature by that time. Microsoft isn't going away anytime soon, but its growth has ended unless they adapt better.

    Re: Google Chrome OS

If it isn't out until late 2010 then Windows 7 will have been out for almost a year. That should give Microsoft time to develop either a netbook only OS or a scaled down Windows 7 version specifically for netbooks. If they can do that and sell it for under $100 then they should be able to keep most of the market share.

    Re: Google Chrome OS

The question is, will Google have the stupid Linux naming for apps in this OS?

I languished on grand central for a long time and google voice is pretty good, still working out some bugs from what I read, but I like it. I wish they'd have iowa area codes though.

    Re: Google Chrome OS

10 years is a long time, it remains to be seen how google will grow the os from the netbook market (or even what their entry will look like). It will do what linux was not able to do as far as usability and brand awareness, and combine it with their "apps", there's a lot of potential for google to do things that we can't foresee.

I mean really, they are moving slowly in so many areas, but they are moving. Gmail, apps, voice, android, desktop os. There are a lot of individual pieces that may be pretty formidable in 10 years, especially when you look at them tying everything together.

They've not gone after the corporate market, it's hard to discount them if/when they do decide to target that area.

Are you sure they don't have Iowa area codes? I thought I read that they purchased a bunch of numbers. If they don't have Iowa numbers than I'm going to pass.

Iowa has some screwy telephone laws. Typically these services avoid Iowa numbers. Google might be one of the few that will pay extra to have Iowa numbers, but I'm not holding by breathe.

It will be interesting to see if the EU makes Google ship the OS without the browser like they are making Microsoft. That would be funny. A version of the OS that basically does nothing.
