Re: Becker pleads not guilty in Thomas shooting

Could be interesting to see where the trial will be moved to most likely to find a "unbiased" jury... probably hard to find here here in the state in my opinion

This, I think it's highly likely he won't be found guilty for this exact reason.

Is he going to try and get off on insanity?

This is purely my assumption, but yes. When he was committed the night before, or whenever it was, I figured this is the obvious avenue a lawyer is going to pursue. I haven't read up on his history, frankly, but I would assume there is probably a level of legitimacy to his psychological problems.

I also think a plea of insanity will work in his favor. Unfortunately in the court of law if you're crazy you're not guilty.

If that is the case... he won't just get off, he will be institutionalized in some form most likely for the rest of his life

This is what is so troubling about the whole ordeal. It is pretty evident that Becker had made some poor choices but it is also evident that he had some psychological issues. I can't help but think that the system failed this kid by releasing him on his own rather then into the custody of the police which was how they had intended it to be. Why he ended up doing what he did is probably something that we may never know the answer to.

Re: Becker pleads not guilty in Thomas shooting

He might just be taking a chance here. The case against him is so solid, the state might not have given him much of a plea bargain. So he's going to trial and hoping for a sympathetic jury.

He could actually get out fairly quick depending on some things. If he pleads insanity and they find him not guilty based on it, I doubt he would be there more than 5 years unless he is really really messed up in the head

Yeah, everything I've read seems insistent that the system didn't fail, but frankly I don't see how it didn't. I don't know enough of the details though.

Re: Becker pleads not guilty in Thomas shooting

He will try insanity, at this point that is his only option. As an affirmative defense he will have to prove it, it will be up to his defense counsel to show he was unable to appreciate the criminality of his actions or to conform to it. If he knew it was wrong and still went through with it he won't be considered insane. A claim of insanity fails 75% of the time it is used.

It also won't help that he was in a psych ward and was released, he must not have been that insane.

Eyewitness accounts have him allegedly running from the building screaming about Satan as if he was having a conversation with him. I think this kid was deeply troubled.

This would be my guess too.
